The Ultimate Metal Detector | Minelab CTX 3030

The Minelab CTX 3030 is without a doubt an excellent metal detector. While it is true that there are many great detectors on the market, the Minelab CTX 3030 happens to be my favorite detector hands down. When it comes to determining what makes a great metal detector in my opinion, I tend to focus on a few keys factors to help me rank them. First off, we always hear people say that we should never judge a book by its cover, but in this case, I do. Style, color, display, and the coil are one of the first things everyone sees when looking at a detector. Therefore, I too notice those things right away. The Minelab CTX 3030 is an incredibly good looking and stylish detector. I have found over the years that I tend to lean towards Minelab’s products when it comes to looks. I feel that they have done an excellent job with designing good looking detectors, coils, batteries, headphones, and more.

The next thing that I noticed about the Ultimate Minelab CTX 3030 was the way it feels in my hand. It’s like a handgun if it fits your hand good and is well-balanced, then often times you’ll find that gun to be a good fit for you. Well, the same goes for detectors, when I picked up the CTX for the first time, I did notice that it was a little on the heavy side but felt very well balanced in my arm. Because of the weight distribution, I was able to swing it comfortably and maintain a steady swing back and forth. It is true that it’s not the lightest detector you can buy, but for me, it fit and felt good to hold and I was wanting to see more.

A few more things that I noticed right away was the stock coil, shaft, and the battery. All three matched my expectations. The stock coil is a great size; 11” search coil and has a great look to it. The battery is well mounted and has easy access to replace it as needed throughout my treasure hunt. The shaft is one of the coolest ones I have seen on a detector. It is a hollowed-out, light-weight shaft that the coil wire runs through. The shaft helps to hide the wire that gives it a clean look and finish.

When I turned on the CTX for the first time, I was even more amazed by the little Minelab jingle that plays when it powers on. Even still today, I look forward to hearing that jingle because to me, it represents performance and adventure. The menu screen is easy to navigate through, and there are many different options and settings that you can simply change at any time. You can run the manufacturing settings, or you can get creative down the road and make it fully customizable. I particularly love the GPS locator function. The ground balance function is easy to use every time you turn it on, it’s just quick and easy. The target screen is amazing! Not only does it give you the easy to read target number, it also gives you the depth of the target with nice big numbers so you can clearly see everything very well. I really like the trigger pinpoint mode as well, within seconds you can push the trigger with your index finger and pinpoint your target very quickly.

It comes with a backlight, locality, it’s wireless, and there are many more menu options to choose from at your fingertips without hassle.  The MODES options have great pre-loaded options like Coins, Beach, Jewelry, Silver, and much more. All in all, these are prime options for advanced detectorists and beginners too! When it comes to metal detectors, there are many detectors that are not waterproof, but many new detectors have hit the market in the last couple of years that are. Some are made to withstand water up to 10 feet deep, while some can even go further down in the water than that. The detectors that can go deeper than 10 feet are meant more for scuba diving, while the others were made for detecting in rivers and lakes. All of these detectors listed below are protected from rain so don’t let the weather stop you.

Some detectors are made to detect in freshwater while others are meant to work in saltwater, but we’ll get more into that on another blog at another time. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF UNDERWATER METAL DETECTORS?

Aside from being waterproof, underwater metal detectors work differently to find metal through water, wet sand, and different textured ground. There are two types of metal detectors that work underwater: pulse induction (PI) metal detectors, and exceptionally low frequency (VLF) metal detectors. Pulse induction metal detectors work underwater by sending electronic pulses that are not affected by water and wet minerals. They send rapid electronic pulses that are sensitive to precious metals, so they can detect through the wet or mineralized ground. PI metal detectors are the best choice for use on beaches or for deeper treasure hunting.

Very low-frequency metal detectors work through water and wet surfaces, but the circuits are more affected by mineralized ground. You can adjust sensitivity settings as you search to ensure VLF metal detectors work through mineralized surfaces. They are extremely sensitive to coins and jewelry but will not detect every small piece of lesser metal.

Garrett has successfully created the newest metal detector on the market, the Garrett Ace Apex |Multi Flex. Most of my blogs come from information that I’ve collected from the manufacturers and personal sales experience, but this time, I wanted to write about my opinions and thoughts of this detector.

To start off… Wow! I really like the style, color, and the light-weight of this detector. The first thing I noticed was the display screen. It reminds me of the XP Metal Detectors brand; thin and high-resolution graphics. I am big on style and functionalities when it comes to metal detectors and the Apex caught my attention right away. The next thing I noticed was the ‘Multi-Frequency Technology.’ I’ve been using many multi-frequency metal detectors lately and I feel when it comes to metal detecting for relics, coins, & caches, I really prefer multiple frequencies for sure.

Garrett Ace Apex |Multi Flex runs frequencies from 5, 10, 15, 20 kHz and it also has the multi salt mode as well. Again, I would say that I am impressed! Price is also an important factor. I have been known to use high-end metal detectors that are not cheap, but I am extremely interested in learning and using metal detectors that perform well at a great cost. The Apex starts at $424 without headphones and $492 with wireless headphones. That is another win for Garrett. Treasures in America has noticed that over half of our customers are looking for what we call “mid-grade” detectors for around $500 or under and many of the same questions are being asked…

Will it perform well?

Will it detect targets deeper than 6 inches?

Will it find relics and coins?

Can I use it to hunt for a variety of different types of targets?

I will tell you, the answer to those questions are yes, yes, yes, & yes! I really do feel that this metal detector will appeal to many detectorists. Not only will it NOT break the bank, but it will also perform very well and I believe that this detector might even come to be desired as much as the Minelab Equinox series, Nokta Anfibio Series, and the Fisher Research Labs F75, Fisher Goldbug Series, and many more. It is that cool!

A few more things you may want to consider are that this metal detector only weighs 2.5 pounds. That is extremely light, and I think most people will be able to swing this detector much longer than a heavier one. Some people may be able to hunt all day long and not wear out their arm, but there is a big difference (more than you might think) from a 2.5-pound detector to a 6-pound detector. For me, this detector is so light, I forget that it is even there. That is extremely nice when you have a full-day trip planned or even a full weekend of metal detecting and treasure hunting.

Because there are so many great aspects of this detector and I could write about it all day long, I decided to only highlight a few of the functions in this article, but trust me, there are many more. I figure I will give you the information and let you decide if the Garrett Apex is the right detector for you.
