Treasures Can Be Found If You Get Out There
The Jimmy Crossbones Treasure Story
The Jimmy Crossbones Treasure Chapter 1
Every year, millions of visitors travel to Florida for recreation and fun in the sun, and every year they leave something behind. Floridians and vacationers alike flock to over 660 miles of Florida’s famous beaches depositing treasure and trash to be lost forever, that is until someone else comes along and finds it. For some metal detectorists, it is a dream. If there are people, there will always be something left on the beach. Coins, rings, jewelry, and all kinds of valuable items like cell phones are lost and found every year. On many occasions, the owner is tracked down and the lost item is returned. Often, the newly found treasure becomes the possession of the person who found it. I still have the first silver cross I found on the beach with my metal detector. For others, the constant recovery of pull tabs, bottle caps, cans, and every kind of trash imaginable can be a real nightmare. However, the best detectorists have learned how to increase their odds of successfully finding more treasure and less trash. And that success is what keeps them going.
Florida is also well known for another kind of treasure; Spanish gold, silver, jewels, and priceless artifacts. Over the centuries, hundreds of ships have sunk off the coast of Florida and along the eastern seaboard of the United States. In fact, one region of Florida is now famously called the “Treasure Coast”. This area along the state’s Atlantic coast is comprised of Indian River, St. Lucie, and Martin counties. The term Treasure Coast began to be used in the early 1960s as treasure hunters discovered the remnants of the now well-known “1715 Fleet”.
During those early years, a local building contractor, Kip Wagner, embarked on a project to conduct extensive research of the 1715 fleet and where its treasure may be located. In 1966, by then a well-known treasure finder, Wagner co-wrote the appropriately titled book “Pieces of Eight, Recovering the Riches of a Lost Spanish Treasure Fleet”. Many other books and articles have been written about the 1715 Plate Fleet, its treasures, and its salvage since then.
The fleet was an armada of twelve Spanish galleons fully loaded with untold riches, personal items, contraband, and provisions for the ship’s crew. They were sailing north from Cuba along the east coast of Florida back to Spain to fill the King’s treasury with the riches of the New World. Tragedy struck in the early hours of July 31st, 1715 as the ships were engulfed in the full fury of the wind and waves of a raging hurricane. The captain and crew fought heroically for hours to save their ships and their own lives. Despite their best efforts, eleven of the twelve ships were lost at sea. Over 1500 sailors perished during the storm, however, there were some survivors. Almost all the treasure and cargo was scattered along the ocean floor for miles around the area from south of Fort Pierce to Sebastian in the north. For decades, professional and amateur treasure hunters alike have been searching with some success for the treasure. Every summer a dozen or more dive boats set out to search the shallow waters of the area for the lost treasure. They do this legally under the auspices of ‘1715 Fleet – Queens Jewels LLC’ which owns the salvage rights under lease from the State of Florida. To date, millions of dollars in valuable treasure in the form of gold escudos, silver reales, and valuable artifacts have been recovered by the divers on these boats. It is well known that there is still a large amount of treasure to be found and that is what drives the treasure hunters to keep going.
After every major storm or hurricane, treasure hunters and metal detectorists alike hasten to the area to try and find the treasure that may be laying along and just under the newly revealed sand on the beach. More than a few have been successful over the years at finding treasure and artifacts.
I am often asked by people not familiar with the hobby of metal detecting if I think that Spanish treasure can still really be found on a Florida beach. The prospect of that is hard to fathom for the uninformed. My answer is a resounding yes, qualified of course by the caveat that one must be in the right place, at the right time, with the right conditions. And it helps to have the right equipment and know-how to properly use it. But it is possible, and the rest of this story is about a man who did just that. Meet my friend Jim Tippitt, aka Jimmy Crossbones (a fitting moniker) who found a trove of Spanish treasure and relics on a Florida beach with his metal detector.
At the first meeting, Jim is a friendly sort and easy to talk with. With a slight smile and a reserved manner, he makes you feel comfortable in conversation. His southern drawl immediately gives away his heritage. Jim grew up in Tennessee and is a rugged outdoorsman, tanned and fit with short-cropped white hair and a goatee. It would be appropriate to mention that Jim is a distant relative of Davy Crockett, a popular hero of American folklore who also hailed from Tennessee. However, Jim has replaced the famous Crockett coonskin hat for a Minelab brand baseball cap embroidered with his custom Jimmy Crossbones logo.
Jim speaks softly and not often but one should not be fooled. He draws on years of experience and knowledge garnered within the hobby and has multiple displays of relics and artifacts as evidence of his success. He and his wife Linda love being near the ocean and Jim is even certified as a SCUBA diver. When I think about the Spanish galleons that sailed across the Atlantic, I can almost imagine Jim captaining one of the ships although he probably would have been just as successful as a pirate.
My wife Gail and I first met Jim and Linda in 2016 at a meeting of the Central Florida Metal Detecting Club (CFMDC) in DeBary, Florida. After getting to know Jim I learned that he grew up around the Nashville, area. In his early years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and being in the outdoors. Eventually, he encountered a friend who had a metal detector and was intrigued enough to want to give it a try. After acquiring his own metal detector and getting out and using it, Jim was hooked; so much so that metal detecting replaced hunting as his new hobby and passion. Jim liked finding coins and relics and his very first recovery with his new detector was a gold ring. Who wouldn’t be hooked?
The Jimmy Crossbones Treasure Chapter 2
After retirement in 2008, Jim and Linda moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida where they joined the CFMDC club and quickly made friends. Working and traveling with some of those friends, Jim became very accomplished in the hobby of metal detecting. These days his detector of choice is a Minelab CTX 3030, considered by many to be one of the best game-changing metal detectors ever developed. Jim will tell you that knowing every aspect of the detector is key to being successful in the pursuit of coins and relics.
If you asked him, Jim would also tell you that his favorite kind of detecting is searching for civil war artifacts, closely followed by finding colonial-era relics. In fact, he has quite a collection of both. He often travels back to Tennessee and other states in the south and mid-Atlantic region to pursue his hobby. And thanks to where he lives Jim spends a fair amount of time metal detecting along the beaches on the east coast of Florida.
One morning, he was detecting along a stretch of beach that had a significant amount of sand washed out from winter storms. It was just another partly cloudy day on the beach. Soon Jim recovered what appeared to be a flat and blackened, odd-shaped piece of metal. Intrigued but not sure what it was, he just put it in his pocket and kept searching. Not long after, he found two more of those unusual metal objects. Now, he was beginning to wonder if these were silver cobs of Spanish origin. After detecting a little longer, Jim discerned a good signal on the detector’s headphones, a signal he knew was worth checking out. Could this be gold? Perhaps even a gold ring? It was gold and it was small, but it was unusual. It looked like a gold cuff link, but not just any cuff link. This one looked special. Jim called a friend and received confirmation of what he suspected. This was more than likely a tiny lost treasure from the 1715 fleet. Now his excitement was growing rapidly. Could there possibly be more here?
Without knowing it, Jim was about to embark on an amazing adventure and encounter a few sleepless nights over the next several weeks. Another morning, another signal and more gold. This time it was a gold 8 escudo coin and distinctly dated 1712. Now there was no doubt, this was from the 1715 fleet! The almost indescribable feeling of finding a 300-year-old gold coin and seeing that beautiful golden glint in the sunlight was breathtaking. As he continued to search, Jim was finding more escudos, silver reales, and other shipwreck artifacts. And soon he realized that this was the recovery of a lifetime. A metal detectorist’s dream!
Still, with all the excitement, there was a problem. Jim’s emotions were torn. He knew that there was a window of opportunity and he needed to spend as much time as possible detecting the area before the window closed. Unfortunately, his mother was in ill health back in Tennessee and he needed to join his family to be with her. That was the most important thing. Time was of the essence. He left the treasure behind to travel back home to Tennessee to be with his mother and family during this difficult period. Knowing his dilemma, Jim’s brother encouraged him to go back to Florida and finish looking for the rest of the treasure. There was nothing else he could do now and that is what his mother would have wanted. During his drive back to Florida, he had a lot of time to think about life, his family and friends, and the treasure. The treasure was always on his mind. Was there, even more, to be recovered? As it turns out, there was. Over the next few days, he continued to add to the total. Jim eventually recovered dozens of gold and silver Spanish coins and a plethora of other shipwreck relics.
As fate would have it, Jim’s mother passed and soon he was unable to find any more of the treasure. The adventure was over. Jim had his earthly treasure and his mother was now at peace with her treasure in heaven.
While Jim was blessed to be part of an incredible experience going way beyond his wildest expectations, he knows the real treasure is in the memory of his mother and his family growing up as a young man in Tennessee. These days he is making memories with Linda and his own family. And if you are on the beach you might even find Jim next to Linda while she looks for one of those very special shells that she adds to her own collection. After all, the treasure is in the eye of the beholder.
Jim still enjoys the thrill of the hunt and looks for every opportunity to get out and use his Minelab metal detector. Today, that same stretch of beach is now covered over with many more layers of sand. However, we know that more treasure is there, just waiting to be found.
About the author – Marc and his wife Gail live in Altamonte Springs, Florida. Marc has been fascinated with treasure hunting since the early days of Mel Fisher’s quest to find the wreck site of the Spanish galleon Senora Nuestra De Atocha. He was first certified to SCUBA dive in 1973 and purchased his first metal detector in 2011. Marc loves history and travels around North America looking for the next adventure. He started his own Facebook group “Adventures In History”. His motto is “Have Adventure Will Travel”.
Metal Detecting has become a fast-growing hobby in the last few years. Yearly reports show that 2020 was the best year yet and business professionals expect that 2021 will see even more new hobbyists in the treasure hunting community.
Treasures in America was born out ofTimothy C Draper’s, (Tim) vision, passion, and drive for adventure, history, and lost treasures. Tim has been a treasure hunter for over 20 years and has had his fair share of excitement in his career. Tim is the Founder and CEO of the fastest growing online metal detector store in the United States.
“I hope this complete guide to metal detecting helps you find your way toadventure and points you in the right direction for information on metal detectors, what gear to buy, where to go metal detecting, and more. I hope you enjoy this article,” said Timothy Draper.
Let’s dive into this guide so you, as the reader, can plan for your new adventure. This guide will not only help beginners to do metal detecting, but it will also serve to help those who have been doing metal detecting for years. Like the title says, this is a complete guide tometal detecting.
Metal detection is not just an electrical device that you swing back and forth and lets you know if there’s something in the ground below. There’s a lot more to it. Science and modern day technology has made it easy for beginners and advanced users to set out and find treasures that have been lost. Rome was not built in a day and neither were metal detectors. It took many decades to get metal detectors where they are today.
In the 1980’s, those who wanted to become detectorists used to have to attend classes from the manufactures to learn how to use them correctly. Today, beginners can buy a modern metal detector, put it together in a matter of minutes, and start finding treasures on their first day of hunting.
A BRIEF HISTORY TO METAL DETECTING
In the 1800’s the gold rush was at its all time high. Everyone that could travel was looking to strike it rich, looking for gold in the hills. That’s where the first metal detector came from, right? Wrong! Even though it may seem possible, the first metal detector was created for the purpose of helping one of the United States Presidents, President James Garfield. He was shot in the back and even though he didn’t die, the bullet was causing him serious health issues.
WHO INVENTED THE METAL DETECTOR?
Alexander Graham Bell was the first to create and design the metal detector. He hoped that it would help the doctors locate the bullet in President James Garfield, but the first metal detector failed. Later, President James Garfield died of the gunshot wound.
In 1931, Gerhard Fisher, the founder of Fisher Metal Detectors was granted the first patent on the first portable metal detector in the world. He made a discovery in his work on navigational systems and that’s when the very first metal detector came across the market. The treasure hunting world started to spread.
1931 by Gerhard Fisher, Founder of Fisher Metal Detectors and now a combined company named First Texas Products that also owns Teknetics and Bounty Hunter, along with a few more outdoor product brands. I bet Gerhard Fisher would have written a perfect complete guide to metal detecting.
IS METAL DETECTING WORTH IT?
I have spent time with people in their 20’s, as well as retired people, and all of them that start on this hobby of metal detecting and hunting for treasures have spoken very highly of their experiences. In fact, I enjoy talking with them because they all have that smile on their face when they are telling me about their experiences and their upcoming plans to go out in hopes of discovering something new.
Most of them seem happy with finding old coins in the park, hunting old ghost towns and finding relics, or even chasing old legends of outlaw loot buried, all the way to diving in the ocean looking for sunken Spanish ships.
Most of the detectorists that I know spend a lot of their time out in the field looking for their next find but they have also found many other outlets to stay connected on the internet. There are many groups on Facebook and other social media platforms. Some of them are making metal detecting videos and publishing them on YouTube. There are even treasure hunting shows and treasure hunting podcasts that have been growing in numbers over the years.
Is metal detecting worth it? I think the adventure and excitement that everyone has is enough but if that doesn’t get you excited enough, look into the next chapter with some of the greatest metal detector discoveries in the world.
COMPLETE GUIDE TO METAL DETECTING CHAPTER 2
METAL DETECTING FINDS
I’d be willing to bet that there aren’t too many detectorists who haven’t found themselves daydreaming, even if only for a moment, about coming across that extraordinary find that makes headlines around the globe. It could happen to anyone at any time, you just need to get out there and give it a shot.
Whether it’s value or historical significance that drives you, most of us can’t deny that feeling of excitement we get from unearthing something that’s been lost and forgotten with time.
Some may think miraculous finds are a thing of the past. If so, think again, the possibilities are endless of what has yet to be discovered. They’re going to be made by someone, it might as well be you. Use this complete guide to metal detecting to help your search.
SOME WORLD FAMOUS METAL DETECTING FINDS [TOP 5]
THE MOJAVE NUGGET – SOLD FOR $400,000 USD IN 2014
In 1977, the largest gold nugget ever found in California was discovered by a prospector named Ty Paulsen. Ty decided to go metal detecting in the Mojave Desert which in turn served him well. This huge gold nugget chunk weighed in at 156 ounces, which inspired many prospectors to hunt the area in hopes to strike it rich. The gold nugget was later sold in October of 2014 for $400,000.00 to Margie and Robert Petersen. Sometime later, they made a generous donation by giving it to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Still today, it is on display if you would like to see it.
SANTA MARGARITA GOLD CHALICE – SOLD AT AUCTION IN NEW YORK FOR $413,000 IN AUGUST 2015
In 2008, a diver named Michael DeMar was searching and exploring the Santa Margarita shipwreck area of the Florida Keys. While discarding a beer can, his metal detector suddenly alerted him of a large gold target. That’s when he discovered that his detector found a gold chalice that was later determined from the shipwreck. August of 2015, the chalice was sold at a huge price of $413,000.00 dollars in an auction. Because of this discovery, many people decided to take up treasure hunting as a hobby with the dream of finding their fortune and glory. I mentioned it before, there are treasures everywhere, you just need to know where to look.
13 YEAR OLD BOY USING METAL DETECTOR FINDS 2 POUND METEORITE
Jason Lyons, a 13 years old boy, used his metal detector to discover a 2 lb. meteorite rock while prospecting with his dad in the desert of New Mexico. It was later determined by experts that the meteorite was most likely around 10,000 years old. It was easy for the metal detector to find the rock because it was made of a combination of metals like nickel and Iron. These elements are easily detected by all metal detectors.
This is a great story about a 13-year-old boy finding his treasure with a metal detector. It goes to prove that there’s adventure around every corner, you just must get out there and find it. Because meteorites are hard to come by, it makes the story even better.
HOXNE HOARD | BURIED TREASURE
Eric Lawes found what we can all consider as “buried treasure” with his metal detector. This is a story that we all dream about finding and why we all work so hard with our metal detectors. While Eric was searching for his friend’s lost hammer, his metal detector alerted him of a large find. He was lucky and in the right place because he discovered some silver spoons, gold jewelry, and large bags of gold and silver coins.
He reported his find to the authorities and the next day more was found. Around 8 lbs. of gold was unearthed from the ground by archaeologists along with 52 lbs. of silver. After some research, experts said that the treasure was most likely buried around 450 AD. Experts also determined the worth of the treasure around $2.59 million dollars.
THE GOLD BOOT OF CORTEZ
In 1989 a treasure hunter went to Radio Shack in Sonora Mexico to buy a metal detector, hoping that he would strike it rich. Even with old technology from the 1980’s, his metal detector was successful in finding some great things like bullets, coins, and other metals.
One day, he was around 70 miles south of the Arizona border in Mexico searching around with his metal detector. This time, he found one of the most important gold nugget discoveries ever made. This gold nugget weighed in at 289 troy ounces which still today is the largest gold nugget ever found in the Western hemisphere. The other interesting thing about the gold nugget was the shape. It later took the name “The Boot of Cortez” because of the similarity of a Spanish Conquistador’s boot. The gold nugget was sold at an auction for 1.5 million dollars.
Many people ask me all the time “Is there still treasures and gold to be found in the world?” This story and many others like it prove my answers. Yes! There are still many, many treasures, gold nuggets, artifacts, and so much more to be found.
If you use this complete guide to metal detecting, you to could have a chance of finding something big!
COMPLETE GUIDE TO METAL DETECTING CHAPTER 3
HOW DO METAL DETECTORS WORK?
Metal detectors are a very advanced piece of technology. Not just anyone could tear one apart and create their own. They are all built to use frequencies that send waves into the ground and send them back to the coil. From there, the detector will decipher what metal it is and even how deep the target is in the ground.
Most modern day metal detectors can even discriminate between different types of metals so the detectorist user can eliminate not so valuable metals from valuable metals. The more you spend on a metal detector, the more effeminate it will detect, read deeper in the ground, find big gold nuggets, small gold nuggets, and much more. If you are new to the metal detecting world, reach out to the Treasures in America’s team customer service department and they will outfit you with the best metal detector for your needs, wants, and budget.
DO METAL DETECTORS DETECT ALUMINUM?
They sure can. Aluminum metal is a common metal to find, especially when you are in a high trash area like a popular park or a public place that gets a lot of visitors. Most modern day metal detectors will notify the user with a beep and target icon alert on the display screen of the metal detector. This makes it easier for the user that aluminum was discovered.
HOW DEEP CAN A METAL DETECTOR DETECT?
The average metal detector from $100 to $700 will detect from ground level to 6” – 9” inches. Keep in mind that many things can stand in the way of depth detection. The size of the target, the mineral deposits in the ground you are searching for, and other factors like radio waves, electrical pole lines, and more.
When you spend more money on a metal detector, let’s say from $1000 – $8,000, you will be able to detect targets deeper in the ground. Some metal detector brands make metal detectors for the purpose of seeking metal deeper in the ground. I will leave a list below for you to see some of the more popular deep seeking metal detectors.
Minelab GPZ 7000 – The Minelab GPZ 7000 could possibly be the best gold metal detector in the world. Prospecting for gold has been an All-American dream for over 150 years now. I’ll raise my hand for this question, and the answer is yes. Copper can easily detect copper because it’s a very high conductor and the highest resistivity and conductivity rates of metal will pick up on any metal detector greatly.
CAN METAL DETECTORS DETECT GOLD?
For sure! In fact, most brands make gold metal detectors. Which means they are fine-tuned for discovering gold. You can find other metals as well, but they are designed to look for gold rather than focusing on relics, jewelry, and more.
All metal detectors will find gold but a gold metal detector will perform much better when it comes to gold. Some of the gold detectors are better for some gold and some are better for big gold. Some metal detectors will do both. I will list a few popular metal detectors below so you can do some research for yourself.
Not including untrusted brands that come from China and other countries that do not make credible metal detectors, your cost for a metal detector is from $69 all the way to $7,999.00.

This is a complete beginner’s guide to finding structures, treasure symbols, buried treasure, and much more. Become a treasure hunter and discover lost history and riches in your area. Use this best guide to treasure hunting as your treasure bible and it will benefit you.
We all want to be good at what we do, right? This section of this article will help give you tips to help you metal detect like a pro. Pay close attention because these are trade secrets to have been used by treasure hunters for a very long time.
METAL DETECTING TIPS
Not all iron alerts are trash – When the iron function was introduced to the metal detecting world, it seemed that it was a great function. Eliminate all trash, right? The thing is, iron can be annoying but some great relics have been discovered that are made of iron. You decide. Should you dig it up or pass it up?
Do not give up on strong targets – even when that target seems hard to find and you have been digging and digging, do not give up on your target. If you receive a good strong beep, it’s in the ground and you don’t want to miss out on a great discovery. Use a good pinpointer to help you narrow down the target. Also, swing your detector over your hole you dug periodically to get a depth indicator.
Always carry extra batteries with you on the hunt – If your detector takes AA batteries or a rechargeable battery, make sure you have extras. There’s not a worse feeling than your detector dying early in the day before you are ready to quit detecting.
Take more than one metal detector with you – It’s always a good idea to have more than one metal detector with you. If you have an all purpose metal detector then a gold detector would be a good second. Another reason to have more than one is something might happen to your primary and if you have a secondary, you are still in the game. Many detectors brands and models work differently and it’s always a good idea to have two when you find hard to read targets.
Have the right digging tool for the job – It’s always a good idea to take several types of diggers with you on a hunt. You may hit soft dirt and you may find it hard to dig dirt as well. There are many types and shovels and diggers on the market. Research today to find the right ones for you.
Old mines and dumps can have gold – The old timers were good at mining but it’s always a great idea to scout and scan the mining area with your metal detector. You may find the gold that was missed in the old days and you could also find old relics that were left behind.
Hunt after the rain – Not only will the ground be softer after a rainstorm, your metal detector will work better when the ground is slightly wet. The wet ground provides better conductivity and your metal detector will find targets better with stronger beeps.
BEACH METAL DETECTING
Metal detecting on the beach can be a very rewarding and exciting experience. Not to mention that a day on the beach can be beautiful and relaxing. This next section can help you be more successful on your journey.
COMPLETE GUIDE TO METAL DETECTING CHAPTER 8
BEACH METAL DETECTING TIPS
Make sure you get the right metal detector – There are many metal detectors on the market but some of them are not great on the beach. The salt in the water and the sand itself can disrupt the metal detector. Make sure you do some research and buy a metal detector that is beach worthy.
Dig up everything – When you are beach detecting, make sure you dig every time your metal detector alerts you. Don’t skip any beeps. You never know what you will find.
Private beach and private land permits – Always make sure you get permission and/or permits before metal detecting a beach. Do your homework and make sure you follow the rules. There’s nothing worse than having fun until you are caught doing something illegal.
Get to know your beach metal detector – It helps a lot to know your metal detector. Understand the different beeps and alerts that it gives you. Practice makes perfect, so it’s a good idea to spend some time with your detector before you get good with it.
The right digging tools for the beach – A metal detecting sand scoop is a very useful digging tool when you are hunting the beach. Make sure you shop around for the right one that fits your needs and budget.
BEST PLACES TO METAL DETECT FOR GOLD
To find gold you must be in an area that gold has been discovered or is baring gold. There’s plenty of gold maps of all the states in America. It would be a great idea to research your area and state to see if you can have a chance of striking it rich.
Old mining claims and lost mine areas – are a great place to search for gold. Most states have historical records of mining claims and that would help you get started in your area. Once you find an old gold mining claim, it’s a good idea to scan the old mine dumps. The old timers may have missed some gold.
Detect rivers in gold areas – If you have a waterproof gold metal detector, then you can detect in the river beds and see if you can find gold. It’s not a bad idea to also gold pan the sand bends in the river to see if you found a gold source.
Stake a gold mining claim – If you find a gold source, check with your state on how to stake a claim. Most states have not changed their mining laws since 1871, so it’s easier than people think.
Buy the right gold metal detector – All metal detectors will find gold but a gold metal detector is fine-tuned for top performance when it comes to finding gold. Do your homework because the more you spend, the better the gold detector will be. Some are made for deep seeking, some are made for finding small gold, and some are made for finding big gold. Pick the right gold metal detector for your needs and budget. The gold metal detector you choose will be the heart and soul of your adventure. Complete guide to metal detecting 2021.
METAL DETECTING FOR COINS
Always choose the right metal detector for you. There are many great coin metal detectors on the market and you should understand that the metal detector you choose will be one of the most important things you do.
When it comes to finding coins – it’s a good idea to research and think about where people may have dropped coins. Old places like ghost towns, parks, old abandoned buildings, even where a circus has been set up and left.
Pick the right coin metal detector – Always choose the right coin metal detector for your needs. There are many on the market but all metal detectors from brands to different models perform differently. Do your due diligence and pick the right one for you. You may want to research the depth that the metal detector can detect as well.
Research history – Are you searching in the right place? There are all kinds of legends and stories of outlaws burying the coins. There are also many stories of the old homesteads where the family’s buried their coins in the backyard. Think like a treasure hunter and track down those stories and locations. You may just hit the jackpot if you put the time into it.
Bring extra gear – Always bring extra batteries, car chargers if needed, digging tools and shovels, and an extra metal detector. Many unexpected things can happen while you are out in the field and there’s not a worse feeling than coming home empty handed because you didn’t plan for your trip. Think like a boy scout. Prepare for the best and the worst and in most cases, you will be in good hands.
Always dig up the target – When you are out in the field and it’s not a heavy trash area, dig up the target when it beeps. Metal detector alerts can get overwhelming when you are hunting in a heavily populated place but when you are out in the woods or desert and there’s not much sign of high traffic, dig it up. Don’t give up on your dig either. Use a good metal detector and pinpointer to locate the target. Trust me. You spent the time to plan and travel and now you are out in the field, don’t let a great discovery pass by you because you get a little impatient.
RIVER METAL DETECTING
You can find all kinds of artifacts, gold, relics, and so much more in the rivers with your metal detector. Water tends to move objects downstream and not everyone has a waterproof metal detector, so rivers can be a great place to search. Hunting places that no one else has done is important too. The quality of your metal detector is also important.
If someone has been in the area with a metal detector before you, with a metal detector that doesn’t perform as well as yours, there’s a good chance that they may have missed something that your metal detector will not. Keep that in mind when you are choosing the right metal detector for you.
Check the river bends, where the flow of the water slows down because sometimes objects can be found in those bends. Make sure that you have at least a waterproof coil, or better yet a waterproof metal detector so you can submerge the detector in the water in deeper areas.
Many people have found all kinds of treasures in the water. The possibilities are endless and most likely not played out in your area.
Another good tip is to do off trail hiking around a river bed. Try to go metal detecting to the hard to reach areas. Not everyone has the heart to work hard so if you do you may find something really great.
Magnet fisher is a great and growing hobby as well. You may want to look into that. Just another idea to make your scouting more fun and rewarding. Besides, adventure and excitement is what we are doing while we are out in the field. The treasure is just an added bonus! Find your adventure today and research your next move.
COMPLETE GUIDE TO METAL DETECTING CHAPTER 9
BEST PLACES TO METAL DETECT
Where is the best place to go metal detecting? That’s a great question.
Think about a place that could have a treasure. Check your local urban legends and history. Don’t forget about the lost history of unspoken history as well. There’s a lot of lost history that is not mentioned in history books. Word of mouth is often key.
For example, when I hear a new story, I check all the sources I can. That’s including old timers that have lived in the area for a long time. Even better, an old timer family that has lived in the area for many generations. This is one of those times where you need to think beyond what others have thought before you. There’s plenty of wilderness out there that has not been explored or metal detecting.
Research, research, research. That is the key. Yes if you have a great and expensive metal detector, odds are your metal detector can find something that another metal detector couldn’t. This is a great technique to do, but if you do find an area that is hard to reach, not for the faint hearted people, then you may discover something great. You may find a place where you have to drive to, place your vehicle in 4-wheel drive until you can’t drive anymore, and continue on foot.
Now that would be a great place to start. Do your history and research. For example, a ghost town is a great location but in the highly traveled areas, there’s a good chance that many people have already been metal detecting there. What if you explore and metal detect off the beaten trail around that ghost town? Do you think you can find something that way that no one else has found?
What I’m trying to do is to get you to think as a professional treasure hunter. Many treasure hunters have found awesome treasures by exploring in an area that no one else has searched.
The next step is to make sure you are in an area that can possibly hold a hidden treasure. Remember, if it was easy, it probably has already been found. Think about what was buried, the story behind why they buried it, and where did they travel to hide it. Look for historical clues.
Most things that were valuable, were hidden with the idea to come back and retrieve their treasure. Most of the outlaws, Spanish and more, left clues to recover their treasure. Many people get turned around in the wilderness, even when you know the area well. This is why the building of rock monuments, carving symbols in trees and rocks have been treasure hunting clues for thousands of years. To learn more about historical treasure hunting, search and explore Treasures in America’s website and blog section. You’ll be glad you did. Complete Guide to Metal Detecting.
PLACES TO GO DETECT NEAR ME
One of the best ways to learn about good metal detecting places in your area is to join a local metal detecting groups on social media. Most of these groups are full of good people that really like to share their adventures with others. Many of them will help point you in the right direction.
Check your local history. Are you near a ghost town, civil war field, abandoned buildings, and/or local legends? That would be a great place to start. If you live near a beach, that will provide plenty of opportunities to metal detect too. Open your mind and think about where you live and what type of history you would like to pull out of the ground. There’s plenty of places in every state of America, I guarantee it. Read my other article “ The Best Guide To Treasure Hunting”. – Complete Gude To Metal Detecting

BEST PLACE TO LOOK FOR GOLD WITH A METAL DETECTOR
The first thing you need to know is where the gold is. Don’t drive out in the middle of anywhere, hoping to find a source of gold. The mining records in every state have made this task easy for us in the modern day. Most of the old mining claims are on digital file records in the state you live.
The old miners did a lot of this work for us, so have many geologists. Not saying you may get lucky and find a new location but it would be a whole lot easier to be in an area that is baring gold.
Gold usually is present for a long stretch of land. If the old timers found gold in a specific area, chances are you may find a new area up the river, or canyon, maybe the canyon next to that one. Always be on the lookout when you are in places like that.
The old mine dumps can provide gold too. The old timers were good but with modern day technology and a good gold detector, you may find the gold that they missed in those rock piles they tossed away.
Never pass up a good opportunity to search for gold. If you are in the right area that gold has been found, even if you only have a few minutes, take out your gold metal detector and scan the area. Here’s another tip, if you can’t finish detecting an area because you don’t have enough time or the area is too big, do metal detecting in a grid pattern.
That way you can try to remember what you have already detected and picked up where you left off the next time you revisit the same area.

If you want to use a detector over a river or in the shallow waters on the beach, get an underwater detector.
Some metal detectors are made specifically for certain types of metal, like gold metal detectors for example. If you’re hunting for gold, get a metal detector designed for gold to improve your success! If you’re looking for anything, get a less specific model that detects all metals.

METAL DETECTING DIGGING TOOLS
When you’re choosing a metal detecting shovel, there are a few factors to think about. Consider the following before you buy your metal detecting digging tools.
Where are you digging for treasures? If you primarily hunt on the sandy ground like the beach or desert, you’ll need a different kind of shovel than someone digging through packed, wet earth or rocky ground.
Consider the areas where you plan to go treasure hunting when purchasing digging tools. Your shovel needs to be sturdy enough to dig through whatever type of soil you plan to hunt near. Factors like vegetation, roots, type of soil, weather, and more should come into play. There are some versatile tools that will work on a variety of surfaces if you’re unsure.
Also, consider the location of where you’re digging. If you’re deep in the woods, it doesn’t matter much if you make a mess during your dig. If you’re in a park, however, people may be upset if you dig a huge, messy hole. Those digging in public may choose a smaller, more accurate digging tool to do less damage.

METAL DETECTING ACCESSORIES
There Are many different metal detector accessories, all of them are an important key to a successful treasure hunt. Below is a list of different types of metal detecting accessories that you should consider purchasing and taking with you on every hunt. This complete guide to metal detecting will help you choose the right detector and accessories for you.
SEARCH COILS
Search coils are the most vital part of your metal detector. Metal detector coils are the part of the device that actually detects metal beneath the ground. Search coils come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and types. Treasures in America offers a wide range of metal detector coils, so our customers can find the parts they need. There are different types, sizes, and shapes of metal detector coils.
The most common types of search coils are concentric search coils, mono search coils, double D search coils, and imaging search coils. Concentric coils are the most common metal detector coils. They consist of two circular coils, one inside the other. The outside coil transmits the electric current, and the inside coil receives the response. Concentric coils are versatile and work well when detecting metals, as they have a symmetrical and balanced field.
Mono search coils are not quite as common, as they are only used on pulse induction metal detectors.
These have both the receiver and transmitter on one coil. Mono coils have improved depth and sensitivity, but don’t work as well in mineralized areas that require better differentiation. Double D search coils are shaped like two back-to-back D’s, and they are good for use in areas with heavily mineralized soils. The shape of this coil gives it better ground canceling capabilities, so there is reduced interference from ground signals. DD coils are often used for relic metal detecting. I have never come home empty-handed after a hunt.” said Timothy C Draper, Historical Treasure Hunter, Founder and CEO of Treasures in America
METAL DETECTING LAWS AND REGULATIONS
STATE & COUNTY LAWS AND CODE OF ETHICS WHEN TREASURE HUNTING
It doesn’t matter what state you live in, Delaware, Wisconsin, Florida, every state and county is different when it comes to treasure hunting and metal detecting laws. You will want to check online or make a few phone calls to make sure you abide by the laws of your area. I will give you one hint on this, private property does have laws you have to abide by. If you can find treasure on your property or someone else’s (by permission), you are set!
This is one thing that I hope to change in my lifetime. I would like to work with you and go to our congress and politicians and change the way treasure hunting permits are received. Many treasure hunters apply for permits and get denied. This leads to looting and illegal treasure hunts and much of the history and records are never known by professionals.
I feel that if permits were given out more often to responsible and experienced treasure hunters, the treasure hunters can share their knowledge and discoveries with archeologists and anthropologists and that lost history could be examined and documented. Please do your research and treasure hunt and metal detection the right way.
Some states are much stricter than others. If you live in states like Florida, Texas, Oregon, Oklahoma, please search for your local laws. Treasure hunting laws are very important and if you don’t abide by them, you can go to Federal Prison for a very long time. I like to work with my local law so I can learn the ins and outs.
If you would like to join the fight in making your state easier to obtain a treasure hunting permit, reach out to me. I feel that I will be fighting the limitations for the rest of my life. I plan on making this a political issue because I feel that things can be better for treasure hunters and the treasure hunting laws and regulations. Always, always follow the laws. UNDERGROUND EGYPTIAN CITY HIDDEN IN THE GRAND CANYON – PART 1
IS THERE A LOST ANCIENT CITY IN THE GRAND CANYON?
The answer is yes. There are thousands of years of history in the Grand Canyon. Some of it will never be seen by explorers. Some of it is passed every day by hikers and adventurers and they don’t recognize it. But what about lost history that was purposely hidden from us? Not necessarily hidden for the protection of historical sites but to hide history because it will rewrite the history we all were taught. Is that possible? Could there be an underground Egyptian city in the Grand Canyon? Let’s get into more of the story.
WHEN DID THE GRAND CANYON BECOME A NATIONAL PARK?
There’s no doubt that Theodore Roosevelt loved the Grand Canyon area. He visited the modern-day area of Lake Powell and the Grand Canyon several times to explore and admire its beauty. In 1908 he declared the Grand Canyon a National Monument and by 1919, the Grand Canyon status of National Park was granted.
Now pay close attention to the dates that I’ve mentioned above because I think it is crucial to the story that I am about to mention. There is a chance that this could be one of the biggest cover-ups known in the 20th century in the United States. I’ll tell the story, it’s up to you to decide how you feel about it.
THE STORY BEGINS OF EXPLORATIONS IN THE GRAND CANYON
In the early 1900s a man named Mr. Kinkaid, an archeologist from the Smithsonian Institute was hired to discover the Western States. His trip consisted of several places, but one location may have changed the way we think about the Grand Canyon and our government organizations that research history. He started his trip in Green River Utah on the Colorado River through what’s known as the Utah’s Canyonlands. He had a companion and a wooden boat. Their plans were to float down the Colorado River to Yuma to document this unknown and unexplored area.
In 1907, there were no man-made structures like the Lake Powell Dam. There was nothing stopping them but nature itself. What was printed in the Arizona Gazette Newspaper on April 5th, 1909 is something that I found remarkably interesting.
The Gazette news article went on to talk about a lost city that he discovered after passing the area of Lake Powell’s modern-day dam. I am going to quote the Arizona Gazette News Paper and a couple of links where more information can be found.
The latest news of the progress of the explorations of what is now regarded by scientists as not only the oldest archeological discovery in the United States but one of the most valuable in the world, which was mentioned some time ago in the Gazette, was brought to the city yesterday by G.E. Kinkaid, the explorer who found the great underground citadel of the Grand Canyon during a trip from Green River, Wyoming, down the Colorado, in a wooden boat, to Yuma, several months ago.
According to the story related to the Gazette by Mr. Kinkaid, the archeologists of the Smithsonian Institute [1], which is financing the expeditions, have made discoveries that almost conclusively prove that the race which inhabited this mysterious cavern, hewn in solid rock by human hands, was of oriental origin, possibly from Egypt, tracing back to Ramses. If their theories are borne out by the translation of the tablets engraved with hieroglyphics, the mystery of the prehistoric peoples of North America, their ancient arts, who they were, and whence they came, will be solved. Egypt and the Nile, and Arizona and the Colorado will be linked by a historical chain running back to ages which staggers the wildest fancy of the fictionist.
A Thorough Examination
Under the direction of Prof. S. A. Jordan, the Smithsonian Institute is now prosecuting the most thorough explorations, which will be continued until the last link in the chain is forged. Nearly a mile underground, about 1480 feet below the surface, the long main passage has been delved into, to find another mammoth chamber from which radiates scores of passageways, like the spokes of a wheel.
Several hundred rooms have been discovered, reached by passageways running from the main passage, one of them having been explored for 854 feet and another 634 feet. The recent finds include articles that have never been known as native to this country, and doubtless, they had their origin in the orient. War weapons, copper instruments, sharp-edged and hard as steel, indicate the high state of civilization reached by these strange people. So interested have the scientists become that preparations are being made to equip the camp for extensive studies, and the force will be increased to thirty or forty persons.
Mr. Kinkaid’s Report
Mr. Kinkaid was the first white child born in Idaho and has been an explorer and hunter all his life, thirty years having been in the service of the Smithsonian Institute. Even briefly recounted, his history sounds fabulous, almost grotesque.
“First, I would impress that the cavern is nearly inaccessible. The entrance is 1,486 feet down the sheer canyon wall. It is located on government land and no visitor will be allowed there under penalty of trespass. The scientists wish to work unmolested, without fear of archeological discoveries being disturbed by curio or relic hunters.
A trip there would be fruitless, and the visitor would be sent on his way. The story of how I found the cavern has been related, but in a paragraph: I was journeying down the Colorado River in a boat, alone, looking for mineral. Some forty-two miles up the river from the El Tovar Crystal canyon, I saw on the east wall, stains in the sedimentary formation about 2,000 feet above the riverbed. There was no trail to this point, but I finally reached it with great difficulty.
Above a shelf that hid it from view from the river, was the mouth of the cave. There are steps leading from this entrance some thirty yards to what was, at the time the cavern was inhabited, the level of the river. When I saw the chisel marks on the wall inside the entrance, I became interested, securing my gun, and went in. During that trip, I went back several hundred feet along the main passage till I came to the crypt in which I discovered the mummies. One of these I stood up and photographed by flashlight. I gathered a number of relics, which I carried down the Colorado to Yuma, from whence I shipped them to Washington with details of the discovery. Following this, the explorations were undertaken.
The Passages
“The main passageway is about 12 feet wide, narrowing to nine feet toward the farther end. About 57 feet from the entrance, the first side-passages branch off to the right and left, along which, on both sides, are a number of rooms about the size of ordinary living rooms of today, though some are 30 by 40 feet square. These are entered by oval-shaped doors and are ventilated by round air spaces through the walls into the passages. The walls are about three feet six inches in thickness.
The passages are chiseled or hewn as straight as could be laid out by an engineer. The ceilings of many of the rooms converge to a center. The side passages near the entrance run at a sharp angle from the main hall, but toward the rear, they gradually reach a right angle in direction.
The Shrine
“Over a hundred feet from the entrance is the cross-hall, several hundred feet long, in which are found the idol, or image, of the people’s god, sitting cross-legged, with a lotus flower or lily in each hand. The cast of the face is oriental, and the carving of this cavern. The idol almost resembles Buddha, though the scientists are not certain as to what religious worship it represents. Taking into consideration everything found thus far, it is possible that this worship most resembles the ancient people of Tibet.
Surrounding this idol are smaller images, some very beautiful in form; others crooked-necked and distorted shapes, symbolical, probably, of good and evil. There are two large cactus with protruding arms, one on each side of the dais on which the god squats. All this is carved out of hard rock resembling marble. In the opposite corner of this cross-hall were found tools of all descriptions, made of copper. These people undoubtedly knew the lost art of hardening this metal, which has been sought by chemicals for centuries without result. On a bench running around the workroom was some charcoal and other material probably used in the process. There is also slag and stuff similar to matte, showing that these ancients smelted ores, but so far no trace of where or how this was done has been discovered, nor the origin of the ore.
“Among the other finds are vases or urns and cups of copper and gold, made very artistic in design. The pottery work includes enameled ware and glazed vessels. Another passageway leads to granaries such as are found in the oriental temples. They contain seeds of various kinds. One very large storehouse has not yet been entered, as it is twelve feet high and can be reached only from above. Two copper hooks extend on the edge, which indicates that some sort of ladder was attached. These granaries are rounded, as the materials of which they are constructed, I think, is a very hard cement. A gray metal is also found in this cavern, which puzzles the scientists, for its identity has not been established. It resembles platinum. Strewn promiscuously over the floor everywhere are what people call “cats’ eyes’, a yellow stone of no great value. Each one is engraved with the head of the Malay type.
The Hieroglyphics
“On all the urns, or walls over doorways, and tablets of stone which were found by the image are the mysterious hieroglyphics, the key to which the Smithsonian Institute hopes yet to discover. The engraving on the tablets probably has something to do with the religion of the people. Similar hieroglyphics have been found in southern Arizona. Among the pictorial writings, only two animals are found. One is of prehistoric type.
The Crypt
“The tomb or crypt in which the mummies were found is one of the largest of the chambers, the walls slanting back at an angle of about 35 degrees. On these are tiers of mummies, each one occupying a separate hewn shelf. At the head of each is a small bench, on which is found copper cups and pieces of broken swords. Some of the mummies are covered with clay, and all are wrapped in a bark fabric.
The urns or cups on the lower tiers are crudes, while as the higher shelves are reached, the urns are finer in design, showing a later stage of civilization. It is worthy of note that all the mummies examined so far have proved to be male, no children or females being buried here. This leads to the belief that this exterior section was the warriors’ barracks.
“Among the discoveries no bones of animals have been found, no skins, no clothing, no bedding. Many of the rooms are bare but for water vessels. One room, about 40 by 700 feet, was probably the main dining hall, for cooking utensils are found here. What these people lived on is a problem, though it is presumed that they came south in the winter and farmed in the valleys, going back north in the summer.
Upwards of 50,000 people could have lived in the caverns comfortably. One theory is that the present Indian tribes found in Arizona are descendants of the serfs or slaves of the people which inhabited the cave. Undoubtedly a good many thousands of years before the Christian era, people lived here which reached a high stage of civilization. The chronology of human history is full of gaps. Professor Jordan is much enthused over the discoveries and believes that the find will prove of incalculable value in archeological work.
“One thing I have not spoken of, may be of interest. There is one chamber of the passageway to which is not ventilated, and when we approached it a deadly, snaky smell struck us. Our light would not penetrate the gloom, and until stronger ones are available we will not know what the chamber contains. Some say snakes, but other boo-hoo this idea and think it may contain a deadly gas or chemicals used by the ancients. No sounds are heard, but it smells snaky just the same. The whole underground installation gives one of shaky nerves the creeps. The gloom is like a weight on one’s shoulders, and our flashlights and candles only make the darkness blacker. Imagination can revel in conjectures and ungodly daydreams back through the ages that have elapsed till the mind reels dizzily in space.”
An Indian Legend
In connection with this story, it is notable that among the Hopi Indians the tradition is told that their ancestors once lived in an underworld in the Grand Canyon till dissension arose between the good and the bad, the people of one heart and the people of two hearts. Machetto, who was their chief, counseled them to leave the underworld, but there was no way out. The chief then caused a tree to grow up and pierce the roof of the underworld, and then the people of one heart climbed out. They tarried by Paisisvai (Red River), which is the Colorado, and grew grain and corn.
They sent out a message to the Temple of the Sun, asking the blessing of peace, good will and rain for people of one heart. That messenger never returned, but today at the Hopi villages at sundown can be seen the old men of the tribe out on the housetops gazing toward the sun, looking for the messenger. When he returns, their lands and ancient dwelling place will be restored to them. That is the tradition.
Among the engravings of animals in the cave is seen the image of a heart over the spot where it is located. The legend was learned by W.E. Rollins, the artist, during a year spent with the Hopi Indians.
There are two theories of the origin of the Egyptians. One is that they came from Asia; another that the racial cradle was in the upper Nile region. Heeren, an Egyptologist, believed in the Indian origin of the Egyptians. The discoveries in the Grand Canyon may throw further light on human evolution and prehistoric ages.
UNDERGROUND EGYPTIAN CITY HIDDEN IN THE GRAND CANYON – PART 2
AFTER THE DISCOVERY OF THE ANCIENT CITY
One of the biggest things that I found strange was that a known newspaper like the Arizona Gazette published an article about a great and wonderful underground Egyptian city hidden in the Grand Canyon and then nothing! There were no more articles, follow-ups, or other newspapers that wrote about this. The information was just gone. I must ask myself, why was this article written? Was it another article that had no grounds or rights to speak of? Or was it something else?
I tend to believe that if something doesn’t seem right, then it probably isn’t. I decided to take on this story and I spent over 8 years researching anything I could find.
8 YEARS OF RESEARCH STILL ISN’T ENOUGH TO CRACK THE MYSTERY OF THE GRAND CANYON DISCOVERY
8 years of research and I have found many resources and information, but has it been enough? That depends on the eye of the beholder. I do think I have the area narrowed down within a 2-mile stretch and I feel that it could just be the right place. This area is South of the Lake Powell Dam and several miles along the Colorado River. This area goes along with the Arizona Gazette description and I believe that because the East canyon walls are owned by the Navaho Indians, there’s a good possibility that I have the correct spot.
(Pic of the Northern Grand Canyon Walls from the river)
I’ve also found short, and what seemed at the time, pointless documents from the digital library of a University in Arizona. After some time, I started to believe that the documents are not pointless, they were just vague. This was another point in my research where I pondered on taking the face value of the information. Is everything as it seems, or is there more to the story? I’ve also found documentation about the construction proposal about the Lake Powell Dam and the different locations they considered before choosing its modern-day resting place. In these documents, I have found strange accounts of why a few possible places were abandoned. Things that don’t make sense to me once again. This is information that anyone can find if you spend the time, doing the research.
Another thing that I found interesting was a temporary tramway constructed and used… What was it used for? This location of the tramway was too far away for the use of construction on the Lake Powell Dam. What was the tramway used for? This could be another clue to the mystery.
The more I dug into this story to see if I could prove or disprove its credibility, the more I found confusing information. When I start finding conflicting information like this, I start to wonder if there can be some truth to this story. There’s a lot of information that I will not disclose at this time, but I will disclose it later in another article. I mostly want to bring this story to the public’s attention and let you start your research. I would like to plant a seed in and see if it grows. Perhaps open your mind a little and send you down a rabbit hole.
That’s what historical research does to you. Stay on the right path and don’t veer too far from fact and fiction. Common sense is key, remember that. Information can be used. A conspiracy is toxic if you sink too much into it.
WHY WOULD THIS INFORMATION REMAIN HIDDEN FROM THE PUBLIC? WHAT WOULD BE THE REASON?
Let’s start off with why the government may have hidden this story from the public. I would say the biggest reason would be because it would change history as we know it. A lost city that has similar statues as Egypt and China would not go along with what we know in history for North America. There are many accounts of the Spanish voyaging to America but not Egyptians and Chinese.
WOULD HISTORY LIKE THIS MATTER?
One reason I suspect a story like this could be hidden from the public would be that they wouldn’t want explorers and adventures traveling the Grand Canyon area looking for clues in what could be a dangerous environment. From what is mentioned in the article, the climb up or down the Grand Canyon walls could pose a serious threat.
We all know and have seen what it is like during Black Friday. People running around and doing whatever they can to get a bargain. Treasure hunting can be the same way when people think they have a chance to strike it rich.
Many people could argue many different points, but I also think that there is a little bit of truth to every story if you keep your mind open.
UNDERGROUND EGYPTIAN CITY HIDDEN IN THE GRAND CANYON – PART 3
LAST THOUGHTS ABOUT A UNDERGROUND EGYPTIAN CITY HIDDEN IN THE GRAND CANYON
Let’s say that this story has no real meaning and it’s nothing but a story, something to spice up a good hunt, it’s still an interesting thought. At this point, I can not confirm or deny the story’s legitimacy.
If it isn’t true, everyone’s life would go on and nothing would change. No harm. No foul. Just fake news.
If this story is true, then I would say we have a lot to lose. History, government cover-ups, and something new to see and learn. For some of you that are new to stories like this, it may seem impossible but to others, this story seems like it could be real and someone should do something about hunting down more clues and evidence so we all can know for ourselves.
Like I mentioned before, I’m not going to mention all my clues and discoveries in this article but what I’m trying to do is open your mind to possibilities. I would like to ask you to ponder on a couple of things.
Why did the Arizona Gazette write an article about the Archaeologist discovery? Was it just fake news, filling a slot in the newspaper?
Why did the story come and go? Some say that the archaeologist even went public and said that he lied about his discovery. That’s very interesting too.
What would it benefit to make up a story like this and then drop the subject? Fame? But the archaeologist revoked his story, so where did that get him?
Too many questions to ask and figure out. I have a feeling that you as the reader can investigate this story for a very long time.
I would like to invite you to do some research of your own. It’s easy. Go to Google Search and start typing in search terms like “the lost city in the Grand Canyon. or underground Egyptian city hidden in the Grand Canyon.” That will get you started and then you can see if it takes you down a rabbit hole as it did to me. Please keep an eye out for another article I will write about this story in the future. It will give you more insight into my clues, discoveries, and locations. It will guide you further and will leave you in an adventurous and curious state. Until then… Good Luck. Be Safe. Find Your Adventure.

The Garrett AT Pro-Pointer may not be Garrett’s most expensive pinpointer, but it is the popular and best seller. If you do not have the Z-Lynk technology, then you would only need the Garrett AT Pro-Pointer.
FIELD TESTING AND REVIEW ON THE GARRETT AT PRO-POINTER
Two months ago a couple of guys and I were in the warehouse and I was showing them 5 different brands and models of pinpointers. We decided to test them out with a large silver dollar coin that I had from a past discovery. We carefully examined all 5 pinpointers and did a comparison test with the silver dollar, and to my surprise, the Garrett AT Pro-Pointer was within the top 2 of 5 brands. We tested the distance at which each pinpointer would detect the target.
The Garrett AT Pro-Pointer ended up detecting the silver coin from about 4-5 inches away while a couple of other pinpointers would only detect the silver coin about 2-3 inches away. Doing a comparison test like this is a real eye-opener when it comes to detecting distance. For the record, I think there are many great pinpointers on the market, I used almost every brand. There are many different comparison tests that can be conducted, and I cannot confirm if the Garrett AT Pro-Pointer will still be in the higher class of those tests.
SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF THE POINTER
One great option with the Garrett AT Pro-Pointer is the waterproof housing. The Garrett AT Pro-Pointer is fully submersible up to 10’, and you can literally take it anywhere. It’s waterproof, dustproof, and built with a durable plastic that makes it a tough detector for out in the field.
I also really like the deep and the vibration alerts that the Garrett AT Pro-Pointer has. I like to hear and feel the vibes in my hand when I am close to finding my target.
I also like the LED flashlight that is built into the pinpointer. I have found it useful for low lighting situations and when I am digging deep into the ground.
The easy to use one-button function is great for complexity. It’s easy to change settings from one button. You’ll want to make sure you read the owner’s manual to learn the functions.
You don’t have to worry about charging the Garrett AT Pro-pointer. Just have an extra 9V battery with you and you can detect for hours and hours. It’s easy and fast to charge the battery.
This pinpointer is a great high-performance device and I know that you will not be disappointed with your decision and purchase.

The XP Metal Detectors ORX is a worthy gold detector to write a review about. I really want to share my experience with you with hopes that you can see that the XP Metal Detector ORX may just be the right detector for you. XP Metal Detectors ORX 2021 Review
BECOMING FAMILIAR WITH XP METAL DETECTORS ORX
When the XP Metal Detectors brand became more known in the United States during 2020, I wanted to see who they were, where they came from, and what they had to offer. I did what I always do and dug right into their website to see what I could find. At the time, their website was a little hard to work around because of the language barrier but I noticed that their site looked professional. That to me is a big deal. I started looking at their different metal detectors, coils, and accessories and I noticed right away that I liked their style. I saw that they had metal detectors that were a true 100% wireless technology which I found fascinating.
I also liked the prices of their products. Nothing seemed to be outrageously priced. Their pinpointers were under $200 and their metal detectors ranged from $650 – $1260. Their accessories were also priced very fairly and from that point, I decided that this could be a good brand and that I wanted to learn more. For the next few days, I watched videos on YouTube, and I surfed the internet for anything I could find that would help paint a good picture of XP Metal Detectors.
That’s when I came across the XP Metal Detectors ORX metal detector model. I liked the price, and I was amazed by the light-weight material. This detector weighs less than 2 lbs… which is incredible! I also liked the two coil sizes that were available with their packages right out of the box, a 9” round DD coil and a 9.5” elliptical DD coil.
CURIOSITY GOT THE BEST OF ME | XP METAL DETECTORS ORX 2021 REVIEW
Once I figured that the XP Metal Detector ORX was a metal detector that I was eager to see and use, I did a few more searches on YouTube and found the video that made me buy it. I did, I bought it just to see what it could do out in the field.
I waited for 3 days to come in the mail and boom, it was at my doorstep. When I opened the box, I felt validated with the purchase because it was extremely light material and appeared to be of high quality. I didn’t dare to take it out of the box because I was still trying to decide if I wanted to keep it for myself or put it in my inventory to sell. For the next two days, I opened the box several times because of my curiosity, I guess I was a little intrigued. Because I am a businessman, I decided to put it up for sale to see if I would get any bites. Within 48 hours, I did receive a message from a customer that said he wanted to see it and try a field test. I don’t usually do these types of things, but I agreed to it and set up a time to meet me at a local park. The customer asked me if I would put it together and charge it so all he had to do is show up, turn it on, and start treasure hunting. I again agreed and spent the night reading about it and setting it up. This is where I learned that I wanted it for myself.
FIELD TESTING THE ORX GOLD DETECTOR
By the time I arrived at the park, I was thinking to myself that I didn’t want to sell it and then I realized that I may not buy it and even if he did, I could always order another one for myself. Now, this next part was what inspired me to write this review.
Within minutes of swinging the XP Metal Detectors ORX around, we started finding coins. I didn’t even get 5 feet from where I started, and we found 4 coins… I thought to myself that we must be getting lucky. I decided to move about 100 feet away and we started finding coins again. What? 6 coins within 10 minutes of searching? At this point, I handed the detector to my 13-year-old boy, and yet again, he started pulling coins out of the ground and he didn’t move more than 10 feet from where he started.
My customer brought 2 friends along and we were all laughing and joking as they asked me if I planted the coins the night before. I can assure you I didn’t, and I can tell you this is the first-time demonstrating metal detectors at this same park. At this same spot. I was just as amazed as they were.
After about 15 minutes of showing my customer the basics, he wanted to try swinging the detector around. He found 3 coins within 5 minutes. This was a perfect situation, not only to show what the detector could do but as a great sales demonstration. As you can imagine, the customer bought the detector from me and he also offered me money for my personal pinpointer, digger, & shovel. I left the park empty-handed but the customer was happy, and I made a great sell.
CLOSING STATEMENT AND OPINION OF THE XP METAL DETECTORS ORX GOLD DETECTOR
This was a great sell day, and I am glad it worked out the way it did but this was an even better day because I realized that XP Metal Detectors created a great gold/coin detector for under $700. In fact, I ordered myself another ORX gold detector the next day for my personal use. It is a great detector and I honestly believe it could be the best coin detector on the market today.
The detector performed flawlessly, and the wireless technology was awesome. The metal detector was extremely light, and I can swing it all day long without getting a sore, worn-out arm. XP Metal Detectors ORX 2021 Review
Written By Timothy C Draper | Historical Treasure Hunter
There is something special about the Fisher F19 metal detector that I didn’t know about and that’s why I decided to do a review on it. The Fisher F19 is one of Fisher’s best and top-selling metal detectors. In fact, I’ve seen retailers jack up the price because there is so many sold. Why is that?
FISHER RESEARCH LABS REPUTATION & QUALITY
Fisher Research Labs metal detectors are already one of the top dogs in the metal detecting market. They created high-performance metal detectors and accessories at a very affordable price. Fisher metal detectors have also been in the metal detecting business much longer than many other brands. I would say that their targeted audience for metal detectorists would be a reliable detector that is easy to use, successful in finding treasures, at an affordable price.
That’s another thing, if you love hunting for gold, coins, and relics and you want to spend less than $700, then the Fisher brand is something you would want to investigate. Fisher metal detectors started in 1931 and are known as one of the most trusted metal detectors on the market. You can do some simple Google or YouTube searches and within minutes find results of happy customers that really like their Fisher metal detector.
I always suggest Fisher to everyone. Their 5-year limited warranty beats every metal detector manufacturer on the market and their customer service department is great to work with. I can tell you as a Fisher retailer, I feel that Fisher’s reputation of well-built detectors is true. Out of hundreds I’ve sold, there have been only a couple of defective detectors shipped out to my customers. Whatever Fisher Research Labs is doing in its design and warehouse seems to be working.
FISHER F19 2020 REVIEW AND DESCRIPTION
TheFisher F19 with the 11” DD search coil is my favorite model of the F19. I really like the DD coil and I feel that it is the key to finding more relics, coins, and other types of treasure. That’s one of the Fisher F19 strong points, relics & coins. This metal detector is a coin & relics finding monster and it will help you be more successful in the field than some of the other detectors on the market. It has an easy-to-use menu screen that’s easy to read and understand the functions and settings.
I think that any beginner and advanced metal detectorist could pick up the Fisher F19 and within minutes, start hunting for the treasures you have been wanting to find. It also has a waterproof search coil to help you hunt on land or in shallow water. It’s not submergible but if you are not planning on going into deep water further than the screen menu, then you will be fine with Fisher F19. Another thing to bring up when it comes to the Fisher brand, many of their metal detectors are great gold hunters even when it’s not called a gold metal detector. All metal detectors will discover gold, but gold detectors are designed to find even more gold. When you buy a metal detector from Fisher, I feel that you get a well-rounded gold detector even when it’s not classified as a gold detector. I believe you get more for your dollar with this metal detector.
It seems that the 19kHz frequency could play a big part in the success that the Fisher F19 has with finding relics and coins. Many metal detector brands and models conduct tons of field research and testing to find the sweet spot and I think Fisher has found the code for this detector. There are many other options and features that the Fisher F19 offers and I am going to list a few things below so you can see for yourself.
Take my advice, if you are looking to hunt for coins and relics and you are in the market for a new metal detector, take a few minutes and investigate the Fisher F19 metal detector. I think you will be incredibly happy that you did. Learn from this Fisher F19 | 2021 Review and make the right decision for you and your hobby.

THE BEST GUIDE TO TREASURE HUNTING – PART 1
HOW TO GO TREASURE HUNTING
WHERE CAN I FIND LOST TREASURE AND LOST HISTORY?
I get asked this question all the time. The answer is, everywhere! Literally everywhere. From Spanish treasure and mines all over the Western states and that’s not including the earlier locations that can be found on the Eastern coast. Ancient lost sites and artifacts have been found in almost every state in America. All you need to do is look in the right area. Not to mention outlaw buried treasure, I have researched a story like this in every state. From train, stagecoach, and bank robberies, there’s plenty to find.
There’s also mobster caches buried everywhere as well. Sometimes it’s money and sometimes it’s gold and silver. I would also like to mention another one of my favorites, Indian petroglyphs, and structures. If you can find this, you have a great chance of finding arrowheads and other artifacts too.
As you can see, the possibilities are endless. You just need to do your homework and that’s what this complete guide to treasure hunting article is going to teach you. I will break everything down the best I can to help mentor you to riches.
IS TREASURE HUNTING REAL?
Of course, it’s real. It may not be exactly the same as an Indiana Jones movie but I have found my last 22 years very rewarding. This is why I created this Best Guide To Treasure Hunting so you, the reader, can understand more about the life of a treasure hunter.

I will explain more of that below in this article. Make sure you pick the direction that you are passionate about because treasure hunting is hard work and it can take years to get it right.
HOW TO GET INTO TREASURE HUNTING
WHAT IS CONSIDERED TREASURE?
I think there’s more to treasure hunting than just gold, silver, and buried caches. Think of the possibilities. What would you consider as treasure? Perhaps an ancient burial site? Maybe it’s finding a lost mine deep in the woods? I’m going to list a few categories below that I think you should look into in your state. The question I get asked all the time is;

Let’s get into a few of these topics and see what treasures lie within them | The Best Guide to Treasure Hunting 2021
Below you will find a few different ways to locate a treasure and lost historical areas. Keep an eye open when you’re out in the field. If you see something that doesn’t look natural, most likely it’s not. Man-made structures, symbols, monuments, and more are perfect clues to find. This list is only the start of what you can hunt for and is not limited to your research and expansion with your treasure hunting and exploring.
Indian Grounds – are a great place to find artwork from the past. These were considered sacred locations and most tribes used them for generations upon generations. Please consider that these are still very important sites. Not only to the local Indians but to archaeologists and anthropologists too. If you ever find one of these locations, please leave it the way you found it. Do not destroy anything. These locations are great for finding arrowheads, bows and arrows, tools, and much more. Take pictures and document what you find. Contact your local Indian tribe and they may help you understand the history.
Ghost Towns – are one of my favorite places to visit. You can find all kinds of treasures here. I have been very lucky to find structures and artifacts off the beaten path of these old sites. Things like miners’ cabins with beds and tables in them. I even found an old newspaper from 1903 sitting on the dinner table of a small shack. If you can visit a protected ghost town, there’s plenty of fun but if you can discover a small one high in the mountains, your chances of finding something really good, that no one else has found, goes up. Remember the best metal detectors for treasure hunting are a great tool in this situation. Check your state and county laws for more metal detecting laws and regulations.
Outlaw Loot – We all have heard of stories of Jesse James and Butch Cassidy. What happened to their riches? Some are still out in the middle of the desert or in the high mountains because they were not able to come back for their loot. Don’t forget about some of the other outlaws too. Some people were more famous than others but nevertheless, riches are riches. This type of scouting takes a little more work and research. It may not be a bad idea to buy some books and read articles on the internet about stagecoach, bank, and train robberies in your state. If you do your research right, it should take you in the right area and if you learn to look for clues and use treasure hunting tools, you may get lucky.
Finding Coin Caches – This is definitely where a metal detector comes in handy, especially one that’s made for coin and relic hunting. If you do a simple Google search, you will find many news articles that some lucky person found while digging a new home foundation or even out metal detecting an area and stumbled upon a great find. Make no mistake, back in the old day’s many people buried their valuables in the ground. Many of them died or relocated in a hurry and never came back for their riches. Metal detecting and treasure hunting are becoming a big hobby and sport now. If you are thinking about trying your luck, talk to me. I sell every brand and model of detectors made in the world on Treasures in America’s website.
Lost Ancient Sites – I have been researching lost history for over 20 years and I can tell you personally, there are ancient cultures and townsites that I have found that are not in any history books. The school systems control what is taught and if they think it’s not important then you will have never heard about it. There are states in America that have major lost historical sites that you may have not known about and that’s exactly what you should be looking for. This can be tricky to find but if you take your time and be patient, I know you can find something that could change history itself. You need to reach out to others in your state. Visit forums and join social media groups. Start asking and searching for the right answers and you may stumble onto an area that might be a huge discovery.
Spanish Treasure & Mines – The Spanish were plunders and miners for sure. They tried to find anything that was valuable and if you follow their breadcrumb trails, I guarantee you can find something from their past. Some sites are more valuable than others but almost all of them are hiding a treasure of some type. I have found many Spanish mines in my day and most of them still have minerals inside. The Spanish were always making enemies and much of the time it ended in a fight. They had to bury their precious gold and silver never to return because of death or injury. Most Spanish sites are similar in the way of clues. You can locate these sites by doing your research and then heading out to the area. Look for rock monuments and symbols. Most of these symbols were carved on rocks or trees. Many times, there can be a campsite, burial ground, mines, or a cache location to just one Spanish story. These sites take lots of time to research in the office and in the field. The Treasures in America team has dedicated many years to Spanish research. You can learn more by reaching out to us.
Civil War Locations – Many Americans lost their lives in these places so please be respectful when hunting these types of grounds. The civil war did leave thousands upon thousands dead. Most of them were buried in an unusual manner in the ground. Tons of artifacts were left laying on the ground and now can be found buried several inches in the dirt. These areas can be somewhat easy to find and metal detect but if you look off the traveled path a little, you may find some greater items that other treasure hunters have missed. Please check your local state and county laws to make sure you’re not breaking any and ask for the permission on private property.
Hidden Mobster Caches – Al Capone wasn’t the only gangster in America. There are many gangs and mobsters in our history. Some of them hid money in the wilderness so others couldn’t find it. Most of these treasures are cash and some have gold and silver bars in them too. If you do some searching around on the web and purchase some books, I think you could follow their tracks and possibly find their hidden loot. If you live in the Chicago or New York area, this might be the right treasure hunting for you.
Old Gold & Silver Mines – The big gold rush happened in the Western states and there’s still gold in “them there” hills. If you find an old mine you might find out that it’s not played out yet. The gold and silver prices dropped so low in the early 1900s and many miners decided that it wasn’t worth mining any longer. Most of them gave it up and never returned. Luckily since the late 1800s, mining claims had to be filed so your state and county have records of old gold and silver discoveries. You would have to do some work but it wouldn’t be hard to find some old mines in your state.
Gold Prospecting – You can find gold in many places and even though the old-timers were good at what they did, there’s still gold in the hills. Even the old mine dumps can be picked through and gold can be found. You can gold pan the rivers and much more. Gold is at an all-time high and many gold prospectors still make good money from prospecting. If you purchased a gold metal detector you can have a good chance of finding even more gold. Especially with a waterproof gold metal detector. Then you can search for rivers and find a rich sandbank.
Nazi Buried Treasure – I have tons of research that tells stories of gold and other treasures that were placed here in America during World War 2 by the Nazi’s. Here’s a clue that I will give you. It will send you down the right path of hunting for Nazi buried treasure. Do a Google search for the “Lue Map” and “Nazi Gold in America”. You will find a lot of information and I know it will get you started. If you make that big discovery, remember who started you on your journey.
Knight Templar Treasure – Everyone has heard of the greatest treasure in the world but did you know that it could be in North America? Some believe that the Knights Templars sailed to the new world and found the perfect hiding place. Some believe that the order of the Templars is still watching over the secret location. Are the Freemasons or the Scottish Rite involved in protecting this treasure? These are questions that many have asked and if someone could find this treasure, it would be the richest treasure ever found in history.
STATE & COUNTY LAWS AND CODE OF ETHICS WHEN TREASURE HUNTING
Treasure Hunting Laws:
It doesn’t matter what state you live in, Delaware, Wisconsin, Florida, every state and county is different when it comes to treasure hunting and metal detecting laws. You will want to check online or make a few phone calls to make sure you abide by the laws of your area. I will give you one hint on this, private property does not have laws you have to abide by.
Please do your research and treasure hunt and metal detect the right way.
THE BEST GUIDE TO TREASURE HUNTING – Part 4
TREASURE HUNTING GEAR AND TOOLS | TREASURE HUNTING EQUIPMENT
Luckily, there’s a treasure hunting online store that I own called Treasures in America. I used my 20+ years of treasure hunting experience to create the best treasure hunting store in America. With modern-day technology, some of the best in the web development industry, my team created an easy to use and clean online store.
I only sell products that I would use in the field. After all these years, I know what is a good tool and what is not. The brands I choose to sell are the best that you can find in the world. They carry a wide range of beginners all the way to advanced products. This leaves huge price differences so you can find the gear that fits your budget. We’re experts in metal detecting and prospecting along with treasure hunting shovels, diggers, and much more. We can help outfit you with the right tool for the job. Reach out to us and we will be glad to help in the best way we can.
TREASURE HUNTING WITH DRONES AND OTHER TREASURE HUNTING DEVICES
I use drones all the time. I think it is a very modern and useful treasure hunting tool to have. I used to have to hike all over the wilderness to find treasure hunting clues and now, I let the drone do the work.
Even though I still have to go on foot to find treasure hunting symbols carved in trees and rocks, I can see structures and man-made objects with the drone’s camera.
Another modern-day tool that treasure hunters can use is a GPR system. GPR’s and drones can get expensive but I think they’re very important to find that big treasure that has been hiding for years. The GPR system will read anything deep in the ground.
Its software will give you locations to caves, mines, buried treasure caches, and much more. Some GPR systems can go very deep in the ground. Some claim 100 feet or more. Some of the cheaper systems will go 20 feet. It’s important for you to do your research and buy the right one for you.
That’s a great question and if I had the answer I would be a rich man. Some believe that the Spanish had a code for burying treasure. Some say that it was always 6 feet deep. I have not found total proof of this yet. I have found swords and other relics just 6 inches deep. I also know that some treasures I’ve been working years on are over 10 feet deep.
This is why I always keep the best and most modern gear with me. You never know how deep the treasure will be. Sometimes you might find your treasure in a cave. Sometimes it will be buried, it’s hard to say. That’s why doing your research is key. Remember that. Know the history and clues to the treasure that you are hunting for.
Find a mentor for starters. If you’re new to treasure hunting, you have thousands of hours ahead of you, and learning the right information is key. Treasures in America has tons of resources for you to read, watch, and learn from. We have many blogs, treasure videos, and a treasure podcast and so much more to offer. If you can’t find what you’re looking for on our website, then you won’t find it anywhere. Go to treasuresinamerica.com to learn more.
You can also follow us on social media. We share our adventures and more on these platforms. It’s also a great way to find others that share the same interests.
I would also like to bring up a few more different types of treasure hunting you can get into. First off, let’s start with underwater treasure hunting. This can be accomplished by scuba diving and snorkeling.. Using a metal detector would be a big advantage to you. Searching the ocean for lost treasure ships and more is a very exciting world.
The next type of hunting includes the best beaches for treasure hunting in the world. The Florida Keys and the Caribbean Sea has proven to be great places to treasure hunt. In fact, some of the best treasure hunters known have found their riches on the beach or in the ocean. This is another task that a metal detector will be the best tool to use. Follow this link to the best beach metal detectors on the market.
And last but not least, river treasure hunting and gear. Rivers can be a great place to hunt for gold and relics as well. I’ve spent a lot of time prospecting the rivers for a gold sandbank and using a waterproof metal detector to find treasures. Do a little research to find places near you to learn more.
There’s one treasure that I have not mentioned yet, adventure and excitement! I don’t want to forget about the new friendships and companionship that comes with this industry. Some of my best treasures have been found in the hunt, not the find. I have made many friends and connections from my years of hunting for riches. You are not alone. I have counted over 300,000 strong that do this as a hobby and/or career. Most of them are great people that love it as much as I do. We have learned that we share the same passion and that has gotten me far.
I have been lucky enough to air on local news channels and major networks. The connections I have spread throughout the United States and even into Central and South America as well. Start your adventure with friends and family. It will give you a hobby and an opportunity to share it with others. I have not met many people that don’t think treasure hunting is very cool and exciting. Experience this world of mysteries and adventure today.
BECOMING A TREASURE HUNTER
I have spent thousands of hours in my office, library, and county records buildings. I would like to tell you that the life of a historical treasure hunter is like an Indiana Jones movie but that shows the exciting moments. There’s plenty of good treasure hunting shows out there to watch to learn more. The truth is that you have to be patient and spend your time researching for sure. It’s hard to find something if you don’t know where or what you’re looking for.
You must do these things to be successful in your hunt. There’s a list below but it is not limited. Depending on many variables, each treasure hunting trip is different.
Choose the treasure story you want to hunt for
Do lots of research about the story
Who hid the treasure?
What was the time frame?
Who was involved?
What’s the location?
What’s the terrain like?
What gear do you need?
Do you need to assemble a team?
Research, research, research
Form a plan by using Google Earth and topo maps
Do a scouting trip
Plan a big trip
Do you need to camp overnight?
Create a safety plan and stick to it
Plan food and water
Make sure someone knows where you are going and when you will be back
Hopefully, this gives you some idea of what to do and plan. To give you an example, I have spent many years on some of my biggest treasure hunts. Some legends can take a lifetime to solve and some can be worked within months, they’re all different. Safety is key and your first priority.
Old mines can be dangerous and so is the wilderness. I spent years camping and hiking the wilderness before I really started to treasure hunt. Because of hazards, I have been through the following:
I’ve been lost a couple of times.
I’ve had heat exhaustion 2 times and this is very dangerous.
I’ve experienced dehydration for hours, becoming very weak.
I’ve come close to not making it out of the mountains because of injuries.
Be careful and smart while you’re out in the field. You can also abandon a treasure hunt because of unsafe conditions. You will always get another chance but only if you make it home safely. Remember that.
This is why I created the Treasures in America team. There’s a lot of work to be done and 2 heads are better than one. These are the reasons I created this best guide to treasure hunting. So you can be prepared as much as possible.

The Best Guide To Treasure Hunting – 2021| Written by Timothy Draper ~ Historical Treasure Hunter
There’s no doubt that Utah state has many legends of lost treasures, riches to be found, and many Spanish symbols carved in stone but why is that? Utah stories and events have been written record since the Pioneers settled in Utah since the mid-1800s. It has made it easy for researchers and explorers to find plenty of information. Utah is not only a place of beauty and LDS history, but there’s also much more and I will get to more of that history in a different article.
WHY DID THE SPANISH LEAVE CLUES, SYMBOLS, ROCK MONUMENTS, AND MORE?
The Spanish left many clues behind and many of those clues are starting to decay and disappear with time. In fact, many tree symbols and rock carvings that I researched 20 years ago are now gone or on their last leg and I know that within my time, only a few will remain. The reason for this is because the Spanish arrived in Central America in the 1500s and made their way further north after that. Some of the symbols and carvings are 200-300 years old and there are only a few trees that live over that time. The same goes for rock carvings depending on if they’re protected from the elements of snow, wind, rainfall, and the sun itself.
Another threat that sometimes is worse than mother nature, is the man. I have seen and heard the greed of man when great historical sites are found. I’ve heard and seen all kinds of destruction to these sites due to some groups that think they are onto something and they start digging under a rock monument thinking that the treasure is under them. I’ve also heard of treasure hunters cutting down tree symbols to display in their homes or sell them to a person for their collection.
The bottom line is, this important information is disappearing and without clues, treasure hunters may not find that riches and the treasure could very much be lost forever.
SPANISH ROCK SYMBOLS IN UTAH
When I decided to write this article, I wanted to use an area that will not only educate the reader but give an example of what can be found if you are in the right place at the right time. Luck is a much-needed thing for treasure hunters but many times in my experience, I was in the right place due to my research.
In Southern Utah close to St. George there is a place of lost Spanish history that still amazes me today. I believe that this area is incredibly old and could date back to the 1700s. If one were to decipher the code, a lost treasure of untold riches and lost history could be discovered. Here are my story and explanation of this site.
At this site, there are many Spanish rock carvings that can be found and I’m not sure if we have found them all yet. There’s a good possibility that there could be more to find. The symbols seem to make somewhat of a rectangular shape pattern that is not noticeable until the locations of the symbols are pinpointed and then transferred to a topo map and map software. I found this very strange because when the Treasures in America team went out to investigate this location, we followed the symbols one from another and we ended up at the same spot that we started from.
This was strange to me because the previous Spanish treasure sites that I’ve searched for in the past, usually do not take me to the starting point. I usually end up in a different location. That’s why I mentioned that there could be more symbols or clues that we haven’t found yet, this site seems to be misleading.
FOLLOWING THE SPANISH ROCK CARVINGS | SPANISH SYMBOLS CARVED IN STONE
First Pattern of Symbols | Dagger, Cross, and a Pinpointer Marker
This is the first set of Spanish symbols that we came to, and they were quite impressive! I realized that the carvings were cut very deep in the rock. Then I noticed the typical Spanish cross that is usually found when the Spanish were the creators of the treasure clues left behind. Then I saw the dagger that could give a direction to another clue or treasure itself. Then another outstanding symbol was the backward “E”, yet again another great symbol.
To be honest with you, if this were the only symbols that we found that day, I would have been incredibly happy with our discovery, but this was one out of 4 symbol locations.
Second Pattern of Symbols | Spanish Cross and the Mystery Symbols
This second site of mystery symbols puzzled me a little, but they still proved to be helpful because the Spanish cross carving is excessively big and can be found in the dried riverbed from below. They’re carved on a hilltop and if you didn’t know what you were looking for, you would pass up this set of symbols. You must be standing at the right place and look up the hill about 50 feet to see this next clue. Once we found the cross found down below, we hiked to the top to find more rock carvings. I have to say, I’m still trying to understand what they mean. We followed one of the main symbols which led us to another symbol.
Third Pattern of Symbols | Circle within a Circle Symbol
On the third set of carvings, I could not see some of them very well because of erosion from many years. We came up to a big circle within a circle carving along with a very smaller one a few feet away. There is also another symbol, but I can’t figure out what it is. After some time of trying to figure out what we were looking at, we decided to use the symbols like the first two sets and decided to follow a direction. We put our backs to the symbols, and we could see a hill in the distance that looked promising.
Forth Pattern of Symbols | Spanish Cross with a Direction Indicator
After following a straight line to the next hill, we found yet another set of symbols once again. This set had another Spanish cross and a chicken foot looking symbol and that let us know that we found yet another clue. At this point, I sat down in front of the symbols and I had to think for a minute. I was overly excited about the discoveries and it wasn’t taking too much effort to continue our search. 3 Spanish crosses found let me know that we could be on to something excessively big. I inspected the set of symbols and noticed that they seemed to be the same depth in the rock and about the same age as well.
We tried to decide to either follow the direction of the cross or chicken foot and the team thought that the chicken foot looked more promising but I’m not sure we followed the right symbol this time. It took us almost exactly to the starting point. That’s when I realized that this site was going to need more investigating.
UNDERSTANDING THE SPANISH SYMBOLS AND THEIR MEANINGS
Spanish Symbols Carved in Stone Aftermath
When I returned home, I used Google Earth to transfer my pinpoints and that’s when I discovered the rectangular shape pattern from point A-D. I also wondered why we ended up at the starting point when we followed the markers that same way as before. What are these symbols telling us?
I can’t answer my own questions about this site yet because it needs a lot more work to break the code. I do feel that I should go back to the chicken foot symbol and rethink my direction. I also wonder if using ametal detector in this area would be useful. It could be a great way to show different time patterns from other visitors. I don’t claim to be an expert on Spanish symbols either. I have been to many Spanish sites and once you may break the code, but are all the Spanish codes exactly the same?
I can tell you that these symbols are old and the depth of the carvings and the lichen and age in the carvings themselves are old. I almost wonder if they’re the oldest Spanish rock carvings I’ve ever seen… There are so many unanswered questions to this site, and I would enjoy help from others. If you have some experience with these symbols or some insights, I would like to hear about them. You can comment below, and I will get back to you or you can contact Treasures in America through our website.
I hope this article gives you some ideas of what you can find if you are in the right area. Always do your history and don’t just go off the history we are taught in school. You need to think outside of the normal and conduct your own research and history of your area to really find the treasures that are hidden. I know that there is lost history around every corner and no matter what state you live in; I guarantee you that there are many mysteries to hunt after.
Until next time… Good Luck. Be Safe. Find Your Adventure.
Spanish Symbols Carved in Stone 2021 | Written by Timothy C Draper
I’m not gonna lie, this was probably the best trip I have ever been on in my life. I was surrounded by family, friends, and lots of history from the Maya culture. Cancun Mexico was beautiful! It was not hard to recognize the cultural differences between North America and Central America; from the taco stands to the language barrier; the different types of home structures, to the landscape. Cancun has its own feng shui for sure and I enjoyed every minute of it.
MY BACKSTORY AND FASCINATION WITH MAYA HISTORY – CANCUN MEXICO MAYA RUINS
From the time I was about 12 years old, I have been extremely interested and fascinated with the Maya people. The history that I was taught in school always intrigued me and I wanted to see the pyramids and structures that were built thousands of years of go. I studied the Maya culture in college and the more I learned, the more I wanted to go out on a great adventure. When we planned this trip, I was excited, to say the least.
THE BEGINNING OF OUR TRIP
I could barely sleep the night before leaving our home for Cancun. My thoughts were imagining vast ancient structures to the unknown world that I have never experienced before. We had to travel from St. George Utah to Las Vegas Nevada which is only a 2-hour drive. Our plane was departing at 9:00 PM and we left plenty early to ensure that we didn’t have any complications with traffic and airport security. During the 2-hour drive, the group was in high spirits. I could tell that we were all excited about the 7-day trip.
Our group consists of 12 people and I am glad that we had a large group because it made the next 7 days remarkably interesting. We traveled in 3 different vehicles and before we knew it, we arrived in Las Vegas. We were all hungry and decided to get a bite to eat before our flight. Once we were in the air, I tried to focus my thoughts. I was far too hyped-up for having to fly the rest of the night. I tried watching a couple of movies but that proved to be pointless. Most of the time, I couldn’t focus on what I was watching. All I could think of was the days that lay in front of us.
We arrived in Mexico City late that night. Going through customs and trying to catch our next flight was something new to me. Customs took longer than I thought it would. Trying to stay alert late at night was interesting. After all, was said and done, we raced to the other side of the airport and barely caught our next flight to Cancun Mexico. I think I slept a total of 2 hours that night, but finally, we landed at our destination.
THE FIRST DAY IN CANCUN MEXICO | Cancun Mexico Maya Ruins
We landed in Cancun early morning; I believe it was around 7:30 AM. We grabbed our luggage and waited patiently for our shuttle to arrive. Luckily, we had Antonio with us on this trip. He is a partner with Treasures in America and a great friend of mine that grew up in Mexico until he was 18 years old. He also had traveled to Cancun many times before this trip, so we had our own Spanish tour guide. As soon as we were outside of the airport, I saw something that I have not seen since I was in Tijuana Mexico, people trying to sell you everything you can think of… We could barely walk a hundred feet without someone trying to sell us something.
We took the advice that we were given and politely nodded our heads and said, “no thank you.” The shuttle took us a few miles away and when we arrived at the car rental building, Antonio took care of us and translated Spanish to English which could have been a longer process without him. There’re a few things to know if you are planning to travel to Cancun and rent a car.
First thing is, you will pay more than you were told when you booked your car rental. I was quoted $165.00 per car and a couple of hundred dollars for a deposit. We needed 3 vehicles for our group and ended paying around $360.00 per car with a credit card deposit of around $1000.00 per car. I think the rental employees mentioned that many Americans don’t have a good track record driving in Cancun. That was easily forgiven as soon as we hit the road to our resort. The Drive was beautiful and remarkably interesting. I learned very quickly to drive cautiously and aggressively to blend in with the traffic flow of other drivers.
VILLA DEL PALMAR CANCUN BEACH RESORT
We followed the beach for a few miles once we were out of the city and I have to say I was excited to see our home for the next 7 days. Roy, another partner of Treasures in America, owns a timeshare at theVilla del Palmar Resort, and we were in for a treat of elegance and luxury. This was an All-Exclusive 5-Star resort built along the beach in Cancun’s finest area. Once we arrived, we were greeted by the resort staff with a slight bow as they say “hola” with their hand on their heart. It was a dreamy resort with everything we could ever think of.
Many restaurants to choose from and all we could eat and drink for the whole trip. It had beautiful pools and plenty of staff to accommodate our large group with anything we needed. Once we were escorted to our rooms, I saw our home for the first time. This was a 2-bedroom suite with 3 bathrooms, a kitchen, jetted tub, and a balcony. I would strongly recommend this resort to anyone who wants to travel to Cancun. We spent the rest of the day at the resort and our dinner was planned next to the pool. During our dinner, we were given Turn-Down Service in our room (which I will explain later) which LeeAnn and I have never had before. When it came to nighttime, we all turned in for the night due to being exhausted from our lack of sleep on the plane. It turned out to be the perfect day.
LeeAnn, Jada, Tyson, Brody, Roy, Heather
FAMILY & FUN IN THE SUN ON DAY TWO | Cancun Mexico Maya Ruins
We were laughed at by the rest of our group when we explained the next morning during breakfast that someone strangely came into our room during last night’s dinner and turned down our lights, closed the blinds, turned on soothing music. They left chocolates on our end tables too. LeeAnn and I thought it was strange, the throw pillows were moved, the blinds were closed, the AC was set to 72 degrees, the room was cleaned up, and more. When Roy and Heather explained what turn-down service was, we all laughed at our expense. The group moved fairly well on this day and we took advantage of the pool food service and drinks. We must have spent about 4 hours total swimming, drinking, eating, and enjoying the sun.
LeeAnn experienced her first bidet toilet and taking dancing lessons next to the pool. The group played volleyball in the pool as many of the hotel guests joined in. It was relaxing and fun!
Jada (Draper) Johnson – Tyson Johnson
THE WEDDING PROPOSAL AND ONE HAPPY FAMILY
I am also proud to say that our family grew in numbers to this day. Tyson, my new son in law asked my oldest daughter Jada to marry him. It was a touching and beautiful thing. Tyson, Jada, Roy, Heather, LeeAnn, and I walked down to the resort’s pier and boardwalk at the beach. Of course, Jada didn’t know what was about to happen but the rest of us did. Tyson came to us parents a couple of months prior to our vacation and asked for Jada’s hand in marriage. Both sides of the family were happy and excited for Jada and Tyson and we were ready for our families to combine and grow.
LeeAnn Draper, Timothy Draper, Tyson Johnson, Jada (Draper) Johnson, Heather Johnson, Roy Johnson
Tyson got down on one knee and asked Jada to marry him and she happily said yes. For the next 30 minutes, the family hugged and took pics of the occasion, and congratulated everyone. Roy, Heather, LeeAnn, and I were already great friends and now we are one big happy family. Heather’s family is a great group of people that we were glad to call family. LeeAnn and I are blessed that we were able to mix two families into one. We love the Johnsons and the Williams. This marriage was a match made in heaven.
EL MECO MAYA RUINS SITE
As the day went on, I was determined to leave the resort because I found Maya ruins just a few miles from the resort. It didn’t take long to convince the rest of the group that we should go do some exploring. We hopped in the cars and headed South 10 miles away. We arrived at theEl Meco Archaeological site and to our surprise, the ruins were surrounded by beachfront properties like a city park. The cost was around $10 per person to enter and I am awfully glad we did. This was the first Maya Ruins that I’ve ever seen. The ruins were very intriguing and well preserved considering they were 1500-2000 years old.
After we were done with our exploration of the ruins we got in the cars and went for a drive through parts of Cancun and explored the city and then made our way back to our resort. It was a perfect day as we finished it off with a great dinner & drinks with some awesome family and friends. I couldn’t wait to see what would happen the next day.
ISLA MUJERES ISLAND, FERRY RIDE, & TEMPLO DE LA DIOSA IXCHEL RUINS – DAY THREE | Cancun Mexico Maya Ruins
On this day, we started off with room service with coffee, eggs, bacon, and all the breakfast goods while others from our group went to one of the resort’s restaurants for breakfast. Roy stopped by our room for a quick visit to say good morning and to plan our day out. Roy is an early riser, so he was quick to make his rounds to the 4 resort rooms to check on everyone. LeeAnn and I stayed in our robes for a while that morning, but we soon came to the realization that we were in Cancun and that we should be out having fun. We got dressed and met up with the rest of the group.
We decided to go swimming for a while and played pool volleyball once again. The losing team had to do belly flops in the pool and that’s when we saw Duckie, Heather’s brother, give that best performance for the losing team. He egged on the viewers which consisted of around 60 people in and around the pool to cheer him on as he was about to do the best self-inflicted belly-flop in history… Duckie is a funny guy and we love him. I’m sure his wife Allison was shaking her head but laughing at the same time.
We decided to leave the pool and take the ferry to a nearby island. This alone was a great experience to drive our cars onto the ferry and enjoy the ocean view for a short time. Once the ferry landed at the pier, we hopped into our cars, and once again we were off exploring. TheIsla Mujeres Island was interesting and the city spread for most of the island. We saw the downtown area where most of the businesses were and then went to the South Side of the island where most of the homes were built.
It was a great place to visit and I found it quite different from other islands that I’ve visited because it is a large island but very narrow. I think if you drove from one end to the other, it would take you about 20 minutes. We ended up at the end of the island, which happens to be the furthest East you can stand in Mexico, they have a plaque to explain that once you get there.
When we arrived at our destination, we got out of the car and admired the beautiful blue color ocean around us, but this view wasn’t over yet. We had a noticeably short walk to the entrance of Templo de la Diosa Ixchel Ruins, and I couldn’t wait to see what lay ahead. Once again, I was not going to explore Maya ruins without documenting our journey, so I got my phone out and started filming. To see more on these ruins, click on the link below.
SCUBA DIVING AND THE CATAMARAN TOUR ON DAY FOUR | Cancun Mexico Maya Ruins
On the fourth day, we woke up and had room service deliver us coffee and breakfast again so we can eat outside on our balcony and enjoy the resort and ocean view. The room service personnel were so professional, they came into your room and set the table where we chose to eat. We told them that we would like to eat at the table on the balcony and within a few minutes, room service told us that breakfast was ready and made their small bow with their hand on their heart and told us to enjoy it. We had plenty of great food like eggs, bacon, toast, omelets, coffee, and drinks. I order the same three drinks as I did every morning, milk, orange juice, and coffee.
The meal was set up so nice on silver platers. It was a beautiful morning. Shortly after eating, Roy came over to check on us, say good morning, and to ask us if we wanted to go on asail boating and scuba tour. We said yes because, well why not. It sounded fun to us. We had 2 hours before the tour began so we finished breakfast and made our way down to where the rest of the group was, never too far from the bar…
The Tour guides picked us up from the resort and took us North about 15 miles where we boarded the catamaran boat and began to sail out into the Gulf of Mexico. After about 45 minutes of sailing, we came to the area where we were going to scuba dive and again, was excited about the next adventure. I geared up and before I knew it, I jumped off the boat into the water and it felt good. Perfect water temperature and the water was clear. Clear enough to see the bottom of the ocean during the whole scuba exploration.
The scuba experience was great, and we saw some beautiful fish, underwater statues, and the ocean in its habitable environment. We scuba dived for about 45 minutes and by then most of us were ready to be done. We climbed aboard and the guides went around taking drink orders. This sailing and scuba boat had a full bar and provided us with snacks and a meal. Not bad, right?
We then sailed on to a nearby island and we went ashore for another hour. We sat down and had lunch and a few more drinks at the beach. After that, we explored the shopping center for a bit. When we returned to the boat, they informed us that we were sailing back to where we started but we were going to do it in style. The boat had an incredibly good sound system and they set the sails as we coursed back to shore. Passing many other tour boats along the way but ours was cooler! Because of the people that were on our boat and most likely the drinks had to do a little with it too.
That night we finished it with a jetted tub bath and LeeAnn and I were feeling like we were in heaven. We stopped by Roy’s and Heather’s room to hang out for a bit and then went back to our room to get some sleep. We had a big day ahead of us in the morning.
CHICHEN ITZA AND THE MAYA TOUR ON DAY FIVE – CANCUN MEXICO MAYA RUINS
We woke up at 6:00 AM on this day and we didn’t have a big breakfast planned, just coffee and heading to the cars. We had a long drive ahead of us into the Maya jungle that is known as the Yucatan. It took us a bit to get out of town, Cancun is much larger than it appears if you travel from the East to the West of town. After about an hour, we found ourselves traveling on the highway alongside tree lines and a very thick jungle. I’ve never seen anything like this before. Most people pay to get on crowded tour guide buses, but we rented cars for a reason, so we had the freedom to do what we wanted.
We stopped at a toll/check station as we needed to pay to travel through and most of us needed a bathroom break. We ended up paying for a tour guide to take us on four-wheelers to cenotes, through a Maya village, and through the thick jungle. Sounded like fun but first, we needed to get to Chichen Itza. Once we arrived at our destination, I was amazed. Chichen Itza was like Disneyland. There were many tour buses and many cars in the parking lot. Hundreds if not thousands of people were there to see one of the 7 wonders of the world.
Once we paid our entrance fee, I didn’t even comprehend what I was about to walk through, the most known Maya ruins in the world. The first half of the tour is getting past all the sales booths and guided tour sales but once I finally walked out of the tall thick trees into an opening of the field, there it was. A magnificent pyramid built by the Maya people so many years ago.
We spent a lot of time walking around the pyramid but there was much more to see so we pressed on. I am going to leave the video for you to see what it is like to visit Chichen Itza. I could go on and on about it but to see it is a different thing.
After we left Chichen Itza, we headed to our next destination, theMi Lindo Yucatan Tour, from true Maya people. I would like to start off by saying this was one of the most humbling things I have ever witnessed in my life. The Maya people are few and far between since the Spanish explorations after Christopher Columbus and now we were spending the next 4 hours with Maya people on their land, village, and cenotes.
It was very cool to learn about the Maya culture and history of the land firsthand from the original people. I would highly recommend this tour to everyone who visits Chichen Itza and the Yucatan area. We saw and swam in two cenotes and drove through their village. All the village children came out of their homes to wave at us as we passed them. It was something else and I’m glad I saw it. I will be back, and I would like to get involved with support to this part of the world. Most of them had houses worse than an old rock shed in the backyard of North America.
There is an old Catholic Church in the middle of their town that was built by the Spanish hundreds of years ago. The Maya people keep it in good condition and still use it today. We were sorry to have to leave but after several hours of having fun, it was time to get back to Cancun and the resort. We still had a 3-hour drive to get back. When we got back, it was around 9:00 PM and a few drinks and late-night snacks are what we wanted. Without too much hesitation, we ate, said good night, and we all went to our rooms to sleep.
RESORT, FOOD, FAMILY & RELAXATION ON DAY 6 | Cancun Mexico Maya Ruins
This was our last full day in Cancun and after several days of exploring, we couldn’t think of anything better than enjoying our resort and the extra amenities that were available with our all-inclusive package. Roy, Duckie, Brody, and some of the others wanted to go golfing. While they did that, I stayed with the rest of them and hung out by the beach for a while.
We were in and out of the pool and we ordered enough drinks that it was a good idea that we didn’t leave the resort. It was a lot of fun to be with the group and all-day relaxing. Once Roy and the guys got back from golfing, the party was on! Everyone at the resort loved our group. We all are outgoing and friendly, and we know how to have fun. I swear we ate and tried just about everything on the menu. It was fun to tell the server, “Hey, get this guy a drink” or “we need 10 chicken quesadillas, 10 tacos, 10 long island ice teas, 8 beers, and 12 shots of Tequila.”
Yep, it was a great day. I don’t think I’ll ever forget this trip and that night as I laid down to sleep, I felt like I didn’t want the day to end because I knew that our trip would be over soon. At the same time, I missed home and our other kids that were waiting for us to come home. The one thing that I was disappointed with that I didn’t do as muchmetal detecting andtreasure hunting as I wanted to. A couple of room service staff saw myMinelab CTX 3030 in my room and told me that if we returned to Cancun, they would take me to some secret places where we can scuba dive for sunken Spanish ships and buried treasures in the area.
As you can suspect, I will be returning for that. Treasure hunting and Cancun Mexico, count me in.
THE RETURN HOME ON DAY 7 | Cancun Mexico Maya Ruins
The next morning, we packed up our suitcases and headed out to the cars. It was sad to leave this beautiful place, but all things come to an end. We still had a long flight home and another 2 ½ hours’ drive from Las Vegas Nevada to St. George Utah. It was nice to see our kids once we returned and we excitedly explained our trip details to them until it was time to go to bed.
SPECIAL THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING
I would like to say thanks to Roy & Heather for inviting us along on this trip. Without you guys, this trip would have been impossible for us. Your timeshare was beautiful and amazing. I would also like to say thanks to our group for agreeing to go with me to these historical sites, it would’ve not been as much fun without you guys. I would also like to say thanks to Antonio for helping us out with interpreting Spanish to English and being our Mexico tour guide. Cancun Mexico Maya Ruins.
Cancun Mexico Maya Ruins – Written By Timothy C Draper 2021
Sometimes, you really must sit back and look at the markings on the wall when it comes to solving a treasure mystery at a historical site. This site still needs more investigating but for now, I am going to help you understand what I found and describe what I saw in the interesting hills just outside of Mesquite, Nevada.
Indian Pictographs of Mesquite Nevada 2015 Adventure
THE BACKSTORY OF HOW WE FOUND THIS SITE
Shaun and I spent many years in the Mesquite, Nevada area. I used to work in Mesquite before I went full-time with Treasures in America. I spent many years researching and learning about the territory so I could have more success in finding lost treasures in this area. Often, Shaun and I would leave during our lunch break to scout out a new possible site of interest. This time was not only fun, but we lucked out and found a great treasure troll of Indian Pictographs.
After researching on the web, I discovered a picture on Google that someone posted from a forum that caught my attention. There was no information about it, except for a hiker asking if anyone knew more information about his newfound discovery. To my surprise, a few people commented back, but no one seemed to know much information about it. When I took a second look at the pic, I knew I had to find it.
We didn’t have much information (except a ‘general area’ of where to look) but Shaun and I were sold an adventure for the day. It wasn’t the first time in our friendship where we just hopped in the car to see what we could find, and it wasn’t our last.
WHERE THE ADVENTURE BEGINS | INDIAN PICTROGRAPHS OF MESQUITE NEVADA
Shaun and I arrived at a little parking spot off Interstate 15, just about a half-mile west of the truck parking area. I believe the road is called, Carp Elgin Road. We parked the truck and trailer there and unloaded the Polaris RZR and loaded it up with our gear. It was exciting because we really did not know where we were going, and we didn’t know much about the area. It was a mystery that needed to be solved.
We traveled north for several miles and we found a few interesting structures along the way. Every time we found anything, we pulled over to investigate it.
We pulled out our maps and discovered that we were several miles to the east from where we were intending to be, but we were in luck as we soon found a narrow dirt road that would take us west, to where we were wanting to go. This old, rough, road was not something you would want to travel in just any “off-road” vehicle. Shaun’s RZR was quite capable of handling rough roads, but this road made us question if we should even keep following it. Honestly, it felt like an old horse trail. In many areas, it seemed that the road completely disappeared but then start back up again.
We finally came to a fork in the road just south of the Moapa Peak area. Now we were closer to the area I had in mind of where we wanted to look. We found another fork in the road, and it took us northwest on what is called, the Hackberry Springs Road. At the end of this road, there was a small parking area where we left the Polaris RZR. From there, we headed out on a trail that quickly took us into a narrow canyon. We still didn’t know what to expect and we weren’t even 100% sure that we were in the right area, but there was a trail to follow, and Shaun and I like an adventure and exploring the unknown. After all, some of the greatest finds have happened when people were lost and not sure what they were looking for, or even looking for anything at all. If everything of significance were easy to find, it would no longer be significant. This trail proved to be a great choice for us because about 500 yards in, we found a BLM plaque stating that we had wandered into an Archeological Site. After seeing this, we were confident we had found the location, now we just had to keep a lookout for lost history.
THE WRITINGS ON THE WALL HAVE A STORY | INDIAN PICTOGRAPHS OF MESQUITE NEVADA
We first came up to some remarkably interesting and cool Pictographs! There were three different panels on the rocks that told a story by the Indians. At first, it seemed to be a normal Indian panel, but after taking pictures and studying the artwork, I started to wonder if maybe there was more to the rock artwork than what it seemed.
I noticed, what looked like, a picture of a dagger with blood dripping down and many of the symbols made of red. Some of the artwork looked somewhat typical, but there was also faded, black art that was hard to decipher at first. After carefully examining the black figures, I recognized some of the symbols and had a hunch of what they might mean… I hollered out to Shaun who was about a football field away, “Shaun! You need to come and look at this!” He hustled down to me and I pointed at the black figure and said, “Do you see what I see?”
We decided it looked like a man on top of a horse wearing a strange hat. Then we discovered that it appeared that the strange man also had a long object running down his waist like a sword. I told Shaun that I think they could be Spanish Conquistadors. After a few minutes, I found three other similar figures, and then three more, all in black paint. We determined that three of them were Spanish Conquistadors/Riders, and the other three were Indians riding their horses.
I was only aware of a few Indian panels within Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, that had Spanish men in the artwork. I had to sit down for a few minutes to think about what I was looking at. Then I realized that the Indians must have been telling a story about coming across some Spaniards traveling on horses, and it seemed that it didn’t turn out good for the Spaniards, a bloody dagger with blood dripping down the knife could only mean one thing, there was a fight! Possibly a blood bath! I took several pictures and we decided to explore the nearby area to see if we could find any more clues.
THE AGAVE PITS
After about another half-mile hike, still following the narrow canyon, we came across the first of three roasting pits called Agave Pits (roasting pits) made by Indians. They appeared incredibly old and well used from many years ago. I took pictures of each one, marked the locations on my GPS, and continued further and further into the canyon. After roughly an hour more of hiking, we stopped finding anything worth mentioning but, on the way back, we sat down to rest and reflect on what we had discovered.
We concluded that perhaps, this had been a sacred place. This site likely wasn’t where the fight had taken place, but possibly a place where the Indian people would go in large numbers, feast on food, and talk about their culture, past stories, and mother earth. But what about the Spaniards and Indians on horses? What about the bloody dagger?
THE AFTERMATH OF THE DISCOVERY OF ROCK ARTWORK | INDIAN PICTOGRAPHS OF MESQUITE NEVADA
For the next few days, I spent several hours searching online for anything that could be linked to this story and/or area. I didn’t find much at first but then tried researching using a different angle. Finally, I was able to come across a few (and I mean a few) articles that “started” to reveal the possible explanation for this story.
A BATTLE OF THE INDIANS AND THE SPANISH BURIED TREASURE
I discovered that a few men, years before me, thought this panel was a story about the Spanish passing through the old Spanish trail in the Moapa Mountains. The Indians at this time had many encounters with the Spanish and most of them were not good stories. In fact, most of the past stories had to do with terror, slavery, and greed from the Spanish. The local Indian tribes were usually the ones that paid the cost, simply because they lived there. The Spanish only cared about plundering, glory, and riches.
These couple of men, years before me, thought that the panel told a story of the Indians, killing the Spanish, and burying them somewhere out in that area. The old men also went on to write that they believed the Spanish, their horses, and all their belongings, were buried in one pit somewhere in that desert. If there is some truth to this story, it could be a great discovery! Not only could someone uncover the truth, but the Indian’s story could be told here and now, in the present time. A story like this can tell a lot by the contents of its artifacts from the ground. If you use a metal detector, please check with the state and county laws before doing so.
I feel that this story should be investigated much further than what Shaun and I did. I would love to visit this area again, but I have so many sites that I would like to revisit; it’s hard to come back to all of them. Extra time is hard to find these days, and some of my other sites take too much of my time. If you would like more information, or if you have more information about this story and site, please reach out to me. I would be more than happy to help as I feel that sites like this should not be forgotten and left untold.
I would like to also mention that if you visit this site or any other ancient sites, please do NOT destroy them in any way. Be careful not to touch the rock art, because the oil from your skin can decay the art faster, and please DO NOT graffiti! Sites like this are all we have left from the past and I believe every site has a great story to be told. If these sites are destroyed, tampered with, or graffitied, then no one will be able to discover and solve their history.
Good Luck. Be Safe out there. Find Your Adventure. Preserve Lost History.
